Job Summary:

The Controls Design Engineer will be responsible for designing and producing detailed HVAC and building automation control solutions for EMC clients and projects. This position will play a key role in developing control system drawings, sequences of operation, and selecting components that align with project specifications and installation requirements. The person will serve as a key technical contributor, creating and documenting system designs while collaborating with internal teams to ensure successful implementation in the field. This role will include, but is not limited to, integrating with various building systems, applying in-depth HVAC and BAS knowledge to support cost-effective and energy-efficient designs, and contributing to continuous improvement of EMCs design standards and processes.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop and produce AutoCAD-based control system drawings, including riser diagrams, floorplans with device locations, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
  • Create and edit sequences of operation (SOO) for HVAC and building automation systems based on mechanical plans and specifications.
  • Coordinate with mechanical engineers, project managers, and field technicians to ensure alignment between design intent and installation practices.
  • Select and specify appropriate sensors, actuators, controllers, network infrastructure, and panel components for each project.
  • Prepare submittal and construction packages including network architecture diagrams and device addressing plans.
  • Support RFIs and submittal reviews from contractors and field personnel during construction.
  • Provide technical support during project turnover, startup, and commissioning.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable codes, standards (ASHRAE, NEC), and customer specifications.
  • Assist in the development of standard design templates and process improvements.

  • Strong documentation skills and attention to detail in technical writing.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Understanding of project lifecycle from design through startup and commissioning.

Education:

  • Associate or Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering or related field.


Experience /Other Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in HVAC controls design, building automation, or smart building systems.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for creating detailed control drawings.
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems, mechanical schedules, and control sequences.
  • Basic knowledge of DDC systems (e.g., Tridium Niagara, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens, etc.).
  • Understanding of communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, or LonWorks.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.


Physical Job Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This position operates in a professional office environment and requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds
  • May need to climb stairs and/or ladders
  • Must be comfortable in both a customer site and office setting
  • Travel up to 25% as needed
