Controlling Manager information

What is a controlling manager?

Controlling Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing a company's financial planning, monitoring, and reporting processes. They ensure that the organization's financial resources are used efficiently and effectively to achieve its goals. Their duties typically include budgeting, financial analysis, cost control, and providing management with insights for decision-making. Controlling Managers often work closely with other departments to gather data and help guide strategic planning. They play a key role in maintaining financial transparency and compliance within an organization.

How does a controlling manager typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

A Controlling Manager works closely with various departments such as finance, operations, and executive leadership to ensure alignment on budgets, forecasts, and financial strategies. Regular meetings and cross-functional projects are common, where the Controlling Manager provides analytical support and financial insights to guide decision-making. This collaborative approach helps identify cost-saving opportunities and ensures organizational goals are met while maintaining compliance with internal policies. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as the role often involves translating complex financial data for non-financial stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controlling manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controlling Manager, you need strong analytical abilities, financial expertise, and a background in accounting or finance, often supported by a relevant degree or certification (such as CPA or CMA). Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP, advanced Excel skills, and financial reporting tools are typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you effectively collaborate across departments and drive business strategy. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, informed decision-making, and alignment of financial goals with organizational objectives.

Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a strategic, hands-on Controller with a strong technical accounting foundation, exceptional analytical capabilities, and sound business judgment. This high-impact role is responsible for leading core accounting operations while serving as a trusted partner to the business.

The ideal candidate is both a steward of financial accuracy and a proactive business partner-someone who can maintain strong financial controls while delivering actionable insights. This role works closely with leadership on key initiatives, using data, process improvement, and sound financial management to drive efficiency, solve problems, and support informed decision-making across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Business Partnership & Analytics

  • Provide actionable insights through data analysis and storytelling, driving value-creating initiatives.
  • Collaborate with business leaders to identify opportunities for growth, efficiency, and profitability.
  • Support and lead cross-functional projects including cost optimization and process improvements.

Accounting Leadership & Control

  • Oversee core accounting functions, including the general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, month-end close, and financial reporting, with scope that may expand based on business needs and candidate experience.
  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial statements in compliance with US GAAP and SOX.
  • Manage accounting policies, internal controls, account reconciliations, and revenue recognition practices.
  • Maintain compliance with state and local tax regulations.
  • Ensure the integrity of inventory accounting through disciplined control processes, reconciliation procedures, and a strong understanding of cost accounting principles and inventory valuation methods.
  • Act as a liaison with Steelcase, our parent company.

Financial Reporting & Close

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes across inventory, project accounting, and service operations.
  • Prepare and review accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Partner with the Senior Financial Analyst to ensure accurate and compliant revenue recognition.
  • Maintain integrity of the general ledger, including inventory, cost of goods sold, and job costing.

Technology & Transformation

  • Identify and lead process improvement and change management initiatives that enhance reporting, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Leverage data analytics and business intelligence tools to interpret, visualize, and communicate insights that support informed decision-making and continuous improvement. Advanced Excel skills are required, and Power BI proficiency is a strong plus.
  • Explore and evaluate automation opportunities across finance and accounting functions to streamline processes, reduce manual effort, and enhance scalability.
  • Play a key role in the company's future ERP migration and broader digital transformation initiatives.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, develop, and mentor the finance and accounting team.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Set clear goals and expectations and provide effective coaching and feedback.
  • Serve as a hands-on leader by actively engaging in key deliverables, supporting team execution, and maintaining consistently high standards of accuracy and timeliness.
  • Manage a team of 4-6 direct reports across Accounts Payable, Payroll, Billing, and Staff Accounting/Financial Analysis.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or equivalent certification strongly preferred.
  • 6-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility; the appropriate level will depend on the candidate's background and depth of experience.
  • Strong expertise in general accounting, GAAP, SOX compliance, and cost accounting; experience with inventory accounting is highly desirable.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proven success leading an accounting function that includes accounts payable, payroll, and general accounting operations.
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with Power BI and data visualization tools is a strong plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a track record of using data to drive decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions and build strong partnerships with business leaders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • High level of independence, initiative, and accountability.
  • Self-starter who is proactive, resourceful, and driven to execute without constant direction.
  • Experience leading, supporting, or playing a critical role in ERP implementations or large-scale transformation initiatives is a strong plus.
  • This role is based in Marlborough, MA and includes regular engagement with leadership teams in Boston, MA and East Hartford, CT.

What We're Looking For

  • A curious and inquisitive leader who thrives on solving complex problems.
  • A trusted partner to the business who can bridge finance and operations.
  • A change agent who can drive transformation while maintaining operational excellence.
  • A collaborative leader who elevates others and builds lasting relationships across the organization.

Salary Range $130k-$160k (based on experience). Plus bonus.

What You'll Get

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Ongoing professional development opportunities
  • A flexible hybrid work environment

This role offers a unique opportunity to influence the company's financial performance, operational effectiveness, and long-term success. If you are passionate about accounting leadership, business partnership, and driving meaningful impact, we would welcome the opportunity to hear from you.
