Job description

EMC Renewables is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Controller to lead the company's accounting and financial operations. Reporting directly to executive leadership, the Controller will be responsible for managing all aspects of corporate and project accounting, financial reporting, cash management, payroll administration, compliance, and internal controls.
The ideal candidates will have strong construction and project accounting experience, preferably within the renewable energy, EPC, construction, or infrastructure sectors. This role requires a hands-on leader who can manage day-to-day accounting activities while supporting the company's continued growth in utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects nationwide.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:
Accounting & Financial Operations
  • Oversee all general accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, general ledger, and cash management.
  • Manage day-to-day accounting activities and ensure accurate and timely financial transactions.
  • Review and approve invoices, purchase orders, expense reports, and vendor payments.
  • Process and oversee weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly payment cycles.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor and reconcile all bank accounts, credit cards, and cash transactions.
  • Manage corporate cash flow and provide cash forecasting to leadership.

Project Accounting
  • Lead project accounting activities for utility-scale PV and BESS EPC projects.
  • Ensure accurate project cost tracking, budget monitoring, and cost allocations.
  • Review project commitments, purchase orders, subcontractor invoices, and change orders for proper accounting treatment.
  • Partner with Project Management, Operations, Procurement, and Preconstruction teams to ensure financial accuracy throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support project forecasting, work-in-progress reporting, and project profitability analysis.
  • Monitor project costs against budgets and identify financial risks or opportunities.

Financial Reporting & Close Process
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including account reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to company leadership and parent company stakeholders.
  • Develop financial dashboards and KPI reporting to support business decision-making.
  • Analyze financial results and provide recommendations to improve operational and financial performance.

Payroll & Compliance
  • Manage payroll processing and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Coordinate payroll-related reporting, tax filings, and reconciliations.
  • Maintain compliance with sales tax, use tax, and other regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and internal controls.

Audit, Tax & External Relationships
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external accounting advisors, auditors, tax consultants, banks, and insurance providers.
  • Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and financial reviews.
  • Support preparation of tax-related schedules and documentation.
  • Assist with bonding, insurance renewals, and lender reporting requirements.

Internal Controls & Process Improvement
  • Establish and maintain effective internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, automation, and reporting capabilities.
  • Develop and document accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensure financial data integrity and support ERP/accounting system optimization.

Leadership & Strategic Support
  • Provide financial guidance and support to executive leadership.
  • Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning.
  • Support strategic growth initiatives, acquisitions, and operational expansion efforts.
  • Foster collaboration across departments while promoting accountability and financial discipline.

Requirements
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience in accounting or finance.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Experience managing month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

Preferred
  • CPA designation preferred.
  • Experience in construction, EPC, renewable energy, infrastructure, or project-based industries.
  • Experience with project accounting and percentage-of-completion accounting methods.
  • Experience supporting multi-state operations.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and construction accounting platforms.
  • Experience working with utility-scale solar, energy storage, or power generation projects.
