Job description

Assistant Controller

If you are an experienced accounting professional looking for an opportunity to take on a broader leadership role with one of North Carolina’s largest and most highly regarded credit unions, we may have the perfect opportunity for you. Our well-established client is seeking an Assistant Controller to help lead its accounting and financial reporting functions. Based in Winston-Salem and reporting to the Controller, this position will play an important role in ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of financial information while helping the organization continue to improve its accounting processes, systems and controls.

The Assistant Controller will be responsible for a broad range of accounting activities, including financial and regulatory reporting, complex calculations and reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and the review and analysis of financial variances and trends. You will research and resolve complex accounting matters, help ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements, and provide financial information and analysis that can be used to support operational and strategic decision-making.

As a key member of the accounting leadership team, you will lead and develop members of the accounting staff while working closely with the Controller and other areas throughout the organization. You will evaluate existing accounting procedures, identify opportunities for operational and technology improvements, and help design and implement processes that improve efficiency, accuracy and the overall quality of financial reporting. The position will also participate in cross-functional initiatives and special projects that extend beyond the traditional day-to-day accounting function.

To be considered for the Assistant Controller role, you should have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and approximately eight to ten years of progressive general ledger accounting experience. The successful candidate will also bring meaningful experience leading accounting staff, a comprehensive knowledge of GAAP and FASB accounting rules, and strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Prior financial institution accounting experience is preferred, and experience with Sage Intacct would be considered a plus.

This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys combining hands-on technical accounting with leadership, process improvement and broader organizational involvement. Intrigued? We would welcome the opportunity to speak with you in confidence.
