Job description

Assistant Controller
Location: Nashville or London
WHO WE ARE:
We are asset managers with an insurance twist - we manage $8 billion of catastrophe, specialty and climate related insurance-linked securities (ILS). At Nephila, we like to shake up the status quo. We were pioneers in offering alternative funding to the reinsurance industry and were also the first to introduce a strategy specifically for managing climate-related risks. We have offices in Bermuda, London, and Nashville.
WHAT WE VALUE:
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • Thinking outside the box
  • Collaboration, curiosity and authenticity
  • Interesting and innovative work
  • Autonomy and ownership

ABOUT THE ROLE:
We are seeking an Assistant Controller to join our Operations team. Reporting to the Head of Valuation, your work will provide support to the portfolio management, risk and capital teams for investment decisions. You will be responsible for key internal and external reporting and will liaise with a broad range of stakeholders across multiple offices. We are a small team, and you will be an integral part of the day-to-day. Our ideal candidate will have a proven track record of meeting tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment, an aptitude for data and analytics, and a collaborative approach to problem solving.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the day-to-day finance and operational processes of the firm. This extends to all areas of recording, monitoring, and accounting for the company's (re)insurance-based and derivative portfolios from deal capture to financial reporting and forecasting
  • Support our loss valuation and claims management processes
  • Work with the company's valuation, underwriting, and research teams to prepare and present materials to the valuation committee
  • Work with the company's fronting partners and fund administrator to confirm accurate and timely transactions and investor reporting
  • Contribute to our funds' annual audit and tax processes
  • Support key internal and external reporting commitments to investors, counterparties, regulators and internal compliance
  • Collaborate with our technology group to build more effective workflows and tools

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • Recognized professional accounting designation (CA, CPA or ACA)
  • 4 years' post graduate experience of hedge fund or investment accounting
  • Experience of assessing and explaining fund performance is preferred
  • Experience with reviewing and valuing reinsurance contracts is preferred
  • Strong communication and data analysis skills
  • Skilled at streamlining operational processes
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Our Ideal Candidate will...
  • be comfortable communicating complex ideas in simple terms to colleagues and clients
  • be comfortable with ambiguity
  • be a critical thinker
  • be naturally curious
  • challenge the status quo
  • have a client service mentality
