The Controller is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day financial operations of Northern Nevada HOPES and its subsidiaries NNH QALICB and NNH Support, and for ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of the financial records and reports. This role is supervisory and leads a team of accountants.

Essential Functions of this role are;

Payroll
  • Ensures the documentation supporting costs allocated to federal funds from personnel activity reports are complete and support amounts charged to grants for reimbursement. oReviews and posts the general ledger entry of the semi-monthly payroll per the labor distribution report and the subsequent cash disbursement from the bank account.
  • Reviews salary allocation, labor distribution in Paychex, and time and effort documents monthly.
  • Accounting
  • Maintains the Fixed Asset module in Abila for all parent and subsidiary companies and ensure that asset acquisitions and disposals are recorded timely. Determine depreciation per IRS and GAAP classification of assets and useful life. oOversees and performs portions of the month end close including the grants close and request for reimbursement, overhead allocation, bank reconciliation, AP/AR transaction entry, prepaids and accruals, depreciation, and intercompany reconciliation
  • Reviews and posts all transactions posted by the accountants. oEnsures costs allocated to grants are allowable and comply with budgets.
  • Ensures all non-grant transactions are classified in the appropriate account. oEnsures compliance with grant agreements.
  • Ensures compliance with finance and agency policies and procedures. oPrepares and provides designated staff with a budget update after the month-end is complete.
  • Oversees direct and indirect cost allocation in the general ledger to ensure allocation achieves reporting goals.
  • Updates accounting policies as appropriate and trains other staff.
  • Reporting & Budgeting
  • Assists in preparation of the annual Medicare Cost Report, ensuring that the general ledger detail is recorded throughout the year in a manner which facilitates reporting. oAssists in preparation of the financial tables for the annual UDS report ensuring that the general ledger detail is recorded throughout the year in a manner which facilitates reporting.
  • Oversees and ensure the accuracy of payroll reports submitted to outside agency by Human Resources
  • Annual 401(k) census
  • Workers Compensation oPrepares or oversees preparation of other ad hoc reporting requests as necessary, including the Washoe County Declaration of Personal Property and the US Census Bureau Annual Services Report.
  • Reviews the monthly WRAP report and recommends to CFO for signature, submits report and monitors reimbursement.
  • Oversees input of the budget into Abila and ensures all changes are recorded in the revised budget.
  • People Leadership
  • Provides guidance to assigned staff. Schedules regular individual and group meetings. oAssists staff members in being self-directed and goal setting; optimizes performance-based development at the level of staff through ongoing conversations and updates.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, or equivalent combination of education and grant management and fund accounting experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience leading organizational accounting functions
  • Proven ability to oversee general ledger, month-end close, budgeting, audit coordination, and financial reporting in a complex, multi-fund environment.

  • Deep understanding of nonprofit and healthcare finance
  • Experience with fund accounting, restricted funding, grants management, and compliance requirements common to federally qualified health centers or similar mission-driven organizations.

  • Strong financial leadership and collaboration skills
  • Ability to partner with executive leadership, program leaders, and external stakeholders to translate financial data into clear, actionable insights that support decision-making.

  • Experience strengthening systems, controls, and processes
  • Track record of improving internal controls, financial systems, and workflows to increase accuracy, transparency, and efficiency across the organization.

  • Computer literacy required.

  • Current CPA license or Master's in Accounting or Business preferred.
  • Due to real and potential conflicts of interest that exist when HOPES Behavioral Health providers render services to their coworkers, it is HOPES’ policy (Policy HR0005) that HOPES employees may not access HOPES Behavioral Health Services. For the same reason, current Behavioral Health patients/clients cannot be employed by HOPES.
