BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:
The P ES EMS/SCADA Department of the P OPERATIONAL TECHNOLOGY Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 3 Management vacancies available. (Role: Professional)
JOB FUNCTION:
Provides specialized expertise, skills and technical support for the operation and on-going assessment, improvement and extension of the capabilities of real-time operation technology systems (e.g. Energy Management System (EMS), Outage Management System (OMS), etc.) Required to ensure adequate support in meeting corporate goals in service reliability, availability, and system efficiency (heat rate). Identifies, designs, implements, tests and integrates software which enhances and supports the needs of the EMS and its users. Responsible for planning, coordinating, installing, maintaining, optimizing, and enhancing the data communication (secure EMS network) and corporate telecommunication networks and security interfaces.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Investigates, designs, reviews, analyzes, documents, implements, and maintains new/upgraded and existing computer systems, databases, programs, and applications for operating, engineering and maintenance requirements. Researches, evaluates, and documents technological advances in computer architecture, hardware and software, applications, and proposes necessary improvements to ensure operation systems availability, reliability and cost effectiveness. Develops flow charts, block diagrams. Writes, tests, corrects, and documents computer programs and operation and maintenance procedures.
  • Maintains physical and cyber security for operation technology systems and Department computer applications. Enforces, documents, and updates established policies, procedures and standards. Ensures data and program security of Department corporate computer applications and hardware. Coordinates the information transfer among operation technology systems and the corporate computer systems. Provides technological expertise, support in the development of Department staff/personnel by training them to maintain/operate/use operation technology applications. Assists in the training of new Systems Engineers and other Department staff.
  • Plans, project manages, documents, and performs hardware, operating system and software product installation, updates, maintenance, and integration into operation and electrical systems (i.e., participates and involved with RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) installations/replacement/removals and electrical system analyses, etc.) Provides after hours service (callouts) to ensure operation systems availability. Investigates and responds to operation systems failures (hardware, operating system and application software) during and outside normal working hours, performs and recommends corrective measures or identifies and notifies appropriate party responsible for correcting the problem. Independently and collaboratively with other divisions and personnel, isolates, identifies and resolves problems with operation systems hardware, and helps to develop specialized test software and procedures as indicated. Submits oral and written reports documenting problem analysis and proposed resolution.
  • Collect and analyze real-time, spot, and recorded system information; investigates, evaluates, and trends system performance; initiates and follows up on corrective actions. Facilitates the acquisition, maintenance, and documentation of technical resources for department personnel. Works with contractors and finalizes contracts, maintenance schedules, and documents work/history for specialized equipment. Travels to field sites, as required.
  • Provides back-up to the Lead Systems Engineers.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from an accredited engineering school in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education, or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge in the management of computerized information and control systems, as needed for configuration and support of operating technology systems.
  • Working knowledge of programming languages (C, python, perl) and UNIX/Linux Scripting (ksh, bash).
  • Thorough knowledge of Server, client-server, and workstation PC technologies and system development.
  • Thorough knowledge of data and telecommunications hardware, software, including supported software and network configurations.
  • Working knowledge of various operating systems including but not limited to Windows, AIX, and Linux.
  • Understanding of contraints and challenges for supporting 24/7 operations.
  • Working knowledge of Networking Systems and data communications concepts and operation.
  • Working knowledge of RTU protocols & configurations including DNP3 & Telegyr.

  • Several years (3-4) experience with PC/server hardware and software installation, configuration and maintenance.
  • BS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering may be substituted for up to 3 years of experience.
