What is the difference between Control Systems Design Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectControl Systems Design EngineerElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related; certifications like CCST or PEBachelor's in Electrical Engineering; PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing control algorithms, working with automation systemsDesigning electrical systems, circuit analysis, power distribution
Industry UsageManufacturing, automation, robotics, aerospacePower generation, electronics, telecommunications, manufacturing

Control Systems Design Engineers focus on developing control algorithms and automation systems, while Electrical Engineers work on electrical circuitry and power systems. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but their daily tasks and industry applications differ.

What are some common challenges faced by Control Systems Design Engineers during project development?

Control Systems Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new control technologies with existing legacy systems, ensuring reliability and safety in automated processes, and meeting tight project deadlines. Another common hurdle is coordinating requirements between multidisciplinary teams, such as mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, to ensure system compatibility. Proactive communication and thorough documentation can help mitigate these issues, and most organizations provide support through structured project management and collaborative tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Control Systems Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Control Systems Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, strong analytical abilities, and experience with control theory and system modeling. Familiarity with technical tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLC programming, and industry-relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) or ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) is often required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and convey complex concepts to stakeholders. These skills ensure reliable system performance, compliance with industry standards, and successful project outcomes.

What is a Control Systems Design Engineer?

A Control Systems Design Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and implements control systems that manage and regulate the behavior of machines and processes. They work on systems such as automated manufacturing equipment, robotics, or other industrial machinery, ensuring that these systems operate efficiently and safely. Their work involves using knowledge of electronics, computer programming, and mechanical systems to create solutions that control how devices perform. These engineers often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and use specialized software to model and simulate system behavior before deployment.

Job description

Sentrillion is seeking a Systems Design Engineer to support the design, deployment, installation, testing, verification, and administration of physical security systems, including surveillance, access control, intrusion detection, and other specialized systems. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys hands-on technical work, customer interaction, and being directly involved from concept through system acceptance. With a competitive salary ranging from $80,000 to $90,000, you will be compensated fairly for your expertise and contributions. This is a chance to make a real difference while enjoying the flexibility of remote work.
What You'll Do
You will lead and support the design and development of physical security systems, including conducting site surveys, determining equipment placement, selecting appropriate technologies, and producing complete design and deployment documentation such as site survey reports, bills of materials, cost models, and system drawings using tools like Visio or AutoCAD.
You will work directly with customers to validate requirements, coordinate site access, provide technical status updates, and ensure designs meet customer, regulatory, and internal standards. Following established engineering and deployment processes, you will support system implementation by creating installation and subcontractor statements of work, providing detailed drawing markups, and assisting installation teams in the field.
This role involves hands-on participation in system installation and troubleshooting, recommending solutions to technical challenges during deployment, and ensuring conformance with statements of work, proposals, codes, and safety regulations. You will also conduct quality assurance activities, validation and verification testing, and develop test plans and documentation to support final system acceptance.
In addition, you will support system testing, integration, and evaluation activities; work with vendors on research, development, and installation support; and use diagnostic tools to calibrate, analyze, and validate system performance. You may lead small working groups, provide technical guidance, support bid and proposal efforts, and assist with ongoing system maintenance and administration activities.
Experience & Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field is preferred, though equivalent experience (typically four years) may substitute for a degree. Candidates should have at least four years of broad technical experience, ideally supporting physical security, electronic, networked, or integrated systems in field or enterprise environments.
Strong experience with system design documentation, technical writing, site design, and tools such as Visio and AutoCAD is highly desired. Familiarity with network infrastructure, system configuration, test instruments, and field installation practices is preferred. Additional certifications related to security systems, networking, or enterprise technologies are a plus.
Successful candidates are detail-oriented, self-directed, and comfortable working both independently and within cross-functional teams. You must be able to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to customers and internal stakeholders, manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, and adapt quickly to changing requirements.
Travel & Work Environment
This role requires frequent travel (up to 70%) to support site surveys and installation activities. You must be able to participate directly in installation and verification work, including working at heights, lifting equipment, using hand and power tools, and operating in outdoor environments with varying temperatures.
Security Requirements
U.S. citizenship is required due to government contract regulations. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate U.S. government security clearance and possess or obtain a valid U.S. passport.
