Employment prospects are strong for those with relevant technical skills and certifications.

How to become a controls engineer with no experience?

To become a controls engineer with no experience, focus on gaining foundational knowledge in control systems, electrical engineering, or related fields through online courses or a degree. Internships, entry-level technician roles, and learning tools like PLC programming and SCADA systems can help build practical skills and improve employability.

Is $20 an hour good for an internship?

For a Control Engineer Internship, $20 an hour is generally considered competitive, especially for entry-level or internship positions that may not require extensive experience. Internships often pay between minimum wage and $20 per hour, depending on the industry, location, and required skills such as control systems, programming, or automation tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Control Engineer Internship position, and why are they important?

A successful Control Engineer Intern should possess strong analytical abilities, a foundational understanding of control systems theory, and be actively pursuing a degree in electrical, mechanical, or a related engineering field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLC programming platforms, and SCADA systems is highly beneficial. Excellent problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help interns contribute meaningfully to engineering projects. These competencies ensure the intern can learn quickly, perform technical tasks accurately, and collaborate efficiently in a professional engineering environment.

What kind of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a Control Engineer Intern?

As a Control Engineer Intern, you may assist in designing, modeling, and testing control systems for industrial automation or manufacturing processes. Typical tasks include supporting the implementation of PLC programs, analyzing system data, troubleshooting equipment, and contributing to process optimization initiatives. You may also participate in team meetings, collaborate with senior engineers, and help document technical solutions. This hands-on experience is designed to give you exposure to real-world engineering projects, helping you build valuable skills for a future career in control engineering.

What is a Control Engineer Internship job?

A Control Engineer Internship is a temporary position where interns assist in designing, developing, and improving control systems for industrial processes, automation, or machinery. Interns typically work with sensors, controllers, and software to optimize system performance. They may also analyze data, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with engineers to implement solutions. This role provides hands-on experience with control theory, programming (e.g., PLCs, MATLAB), and hardware integration. It is ideal for engineering students seeking practical experience in automation and control systems.

What is a controls engineering intern?

A controls engineering intern is a student or entry-level professional gaining hands-on experience in designing, testing, and maintaining control systems used in manufacturing, automation, or robotics. Job description

At E Tech Group, joining our team means joining a group of passionate and forward-thinking experts. We're one of the largest engineering and system integration firms in the United States providing value for our clients through IT automation and control solutions for more than 30 years to the Life Sciences, Mission Critical, Metals & Mining, Warehousing & Distribution, and CPG/Food & Beverage industries. Our national and global scale allows us to help our clients develop and implement standardized solutions at any of their facilities regardless of physical location or the local resources available at that site.
We're adding to the E Tech Group Team! We seek early-career engineers interested in mission-critical infrastructure. As an Entry-Level Data Center Engineer, you'll support the design, implementation, and commissioning of data center systems, working alongside experienced engineers across power, cooling, controls, and network infrastructure.
This role is hands-on and fast-paced; you'll gain exposure to real-world projects while developing the technical and professional skills needed to grow into a fully independent engineer. We offer clear paths to advance into Controls, Electrical, or Project Engineer roles.
You Will:

  • Assist with development of technical documentation including drawings, specifications, and commissioning plans
  • Participate in on-site activities such as system testing, startup, and commissioning
  • Help troubleshoot system issues across electrical, mechanical, and controls systems
  • Support integration of Building Management Systems (BMS) and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms
  • Work with senior engineers to ensure designs meet client requirements, industry standards, and uptime expectations
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and contribute to project reporting
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including project managers, field technicians, and client
  • Be an ambassador who embodies our Core Values, prioritizing the success of E Tech Group, our clients, and the professional development of our associates.

You Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • 0-2 years relevant experience; internships, co-ops, and lab work preferred.
  • Foundational understanding of electrical or mechanical systems
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn in a hands-on environment
  • Ability to read and interpret basic technical drawings and schematics
  • Willingness to travel 30-50% (mostly local with remote support)
  • A DNA comprised of collaboration and teamwork.

You may have:
  • Exposure to data center environments or mission-critical facilities
  • Familiarity with:
  • Exposure to PLC or DDC controlled data center projects
  • HVAC or cooling systems.
  • PLCs, SCADA, or BMS platforms
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design tools
