BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The H QS SUBSTATION & METER SUBSTATION Department of the P SUBSTATION & METER Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional Supervisor)

JOB FUNCTION:

Supervises and directs the safe, cost-effective, & reliable construction, operation and maintenance of substation equipment. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervises, plans, directs and evaluates the work of the assigned personnel in the installation, testing, operation and maintenance of the substation facilities.  This includes administrative functions, such as, preparing performance appraisals, conducting interviews, etc.  Must be available for emergency calls at all times.  Performs field inspections.
  • Implements training and safety programs for assigned personnel, including the tracking and documentation of apprentice and technician programs.
  • Develops hold-off requests to assure proper and safe work areas for personnel and adequate time to perform the assigned work.
  • Coordinates work for external and internal customers including various engineering organizations and other departments.
  • Procures parts, material or equipment required for the installation and maintenance of system equipment.
  • Maintains required records for the division, submits forecasts and reports on the work activities of assigned personnel.  Provides data for use in budget and work force forecasts.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of substation systems construction, operation and maintenance, normally acquired through an apprenticeship/technician training program, military, or substation field engineering training and experience. 
  • Basic understanding of the principles of front-line leadership and supervision or military leadership training.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or database systems for spreadsheet, work processing, and other software applications.  Desire experience with enterprise resource planning/asset management (ERP/EAM) systems, especially SAP. 
  • Thorough knowledge of typical substation and utility safety practices and procedures. 

Skills Requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to influence or persuade various groups or individuals.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
  • Supervisory/leadership skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals occasionally dealing with sensitive, difficult or confrontational issues.
  • Ability to read, understand, and enforce contractual agreements and company policies. 

Experience Requirements

  • Multiple years (5-7) of work experience as a Substation Electrician , 8-10 years as substation designer, or 2-3 years as substation field engineer.  Professional Engineering license is desirable.
