Job description

Job Title: Shipyard Project Supervisor
Department: Carver Marine Steel Works
Location: Coeymans, NY
FLSA Status: Exempt (Salaried)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Reports To: General Manager
Schedule: Monday โ€“ Friday, 6:00am-4:30pm; additional hours as needed
Salary Range: $125,000-$150,000

Position Summary

The Shipyard Project Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the execution of vessel repair, retrofit, and maintenance projects in a fastโ€‘paced shipyard environment. This role applies structured planning and newโ€‘build discipline to repair activities to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with all quality and regulatory requirements. The position reports directly to the General Manager and provides essential fieldโ€‘level support to Project Managers throughout all phases of project planning, execution, and closeout.

Project Execution

  • Oversee dayโ€‘toโ€‘day execution of vessel repair activities, including docking, steel renewals,pipe and system installations, mechanical repairs, and coatings/preservation work.
  • Manage work in drydock, pierโ€‘side, afloat, and confined space environments.
  • Coordinate multiple trades working simultaneously in highโ€‘activity areas.
  • Maintain project schedules and ensure timely completion of critical path tasks.

Planning & Scheduling

  • Apply structured planning methods such as Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and system/zone sequencing to repair scopes.
  • Working with Shipyard super and Project manager Align labor, equipment, and materials with project priorities.
  • Identify growth work early and support rapid pricing and scope adjustments.

Production Management

  • Supervises Foremen, Leadmen, Skilled Trades, and Subcontractors
  • Ensure efficient execution of structural, mechanical, and piping work.
  • Conduct field verification to minimize rework and ensure accuracy.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement across all assigned personnel.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce all shipyard, client, and regulatory safety requirements.
  • Lead daily safety briefings and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  • Ensure compliance with ABS, USCG, and OSHA standards.
  • Monitor hot work, confined space entry, and overโ€‘water operations.

Quality Assurance & Inspection

  • Ensure all work meets contract specifications, class requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Review and enforce welding procedures, fitโ€‘up tolerances, and coating specifications.
  • Coordinate inspections including NDT, ABS/USCG surveys, and owner/thirdโ€‘party reviews.
  • Support system testing, alignment checks, and commissioning activities.

Client & Stakeholder Communication

  • Serve as the primary onโ€‘site contact for Owners, Surveyors, and Port Engineers.
  • Provide timely updates on progress, risks, and schedule impacts.
  • Support Project Managers with change orders, growth work pricing, and schedule recovery plans.
  • Maintain strong professional relationships and customer confidence.

Reporting & Cost Control

  • Track labor hours, materials, consumables, productivity, and job progress daily.
  • Provide accurate status reports, forecasts, and risk identification.
  • Support project closeout, documentation, and turnover packages.

Qualifications

  • 7โ€“10+ years of shipyard or marine repair experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience with drydock projects and live vessel repairs.
  • Exposure to newโ€‘build or major conversion projects preferred.
  • Prior supervisory or foreman experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of steel renewal, hull repairs, marine piping systems, and mechanical equipment.
  • Understanding of welding processes (SMAW, FCAW, GMAW).
  • Ability to read and interpret ship drawings, isometrics, and weld symbols.
  • Familiarity with fitโ€‘up tolerances, distortion control, alignment practices, and coating standards (SSPC/NACE).

Certifications (Preferred)

  • OSHA 30 Maritime
  • TWIC Card
  • First Aid/CPR

  • Comfortable working in indoor/outdoor marine environments, ports, and shipyards.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for safety.
  • Ability to board vessels in port
  • Sit or stand for extended periods; reach, bend, stoop, and crawl as needed.
  • Active shipyard environment including drydock, pierโ€‘side, and afloat work areas
  • Exposure to weather, noise, and industrial hazards
  • Requires regular overtime, night shifts, and weekend work during repair availabilities

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
