Job Title: Coordinator, Human Resources - Attendance & Leave SpecialistJob DescriptionThe Coordinator, Human Resources - Attendance & Leave Specialist serves as the plant's single point of contact and subject matter expert for attendance and leave management within a unionized manufacturing environment. This front-line, employee-facing role administers the National Attendance Program in alignment with the collective bargaining agreement, leads corrective action hearings, and issues attendance-related discipline up to and including termination. The position requires exceptional communication skills, strong conflict resolution abilities, meticulous documentation, and the capacity to navigate sensitive, high-pressure situations with professionalism, consistency, and respect.
Responsibilities- Administer the National Attendance Program in strict accordance with the National Agreement, local contractual agreements, and company policies to ensure fair, consistent, and compliant attendance management.
- Serve as the on-site subject matter expert for line management, supervisors, and employees on National Attendance Program policies, FMLA regulations, Medical Leaves of Absence, and bereavement leave.
- Audit and correct Time Worked/Off System coding for attendance, tardiness, and leaves to maintain accurate, reliable, and legally defensible timekeeping data.
- Lead and document formal corrective action hearings for chargeable absences, notification failures, and tardiness in partnership with line supervisors and union representatives.
- Issue progressive attendance-related discipline, including coaching, written warnings, suspensions, and discharge decisions in accordance with established policies and the collective bargaining agreement.
- Communicate challenging attendance and employment decisions clearly and respectfully, maintaining composure and authority in highly sensitive and emotional conversations.
- Apply advanced conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques to manage high-pressure situations and facilitate constructive dialogue during disciplinary discussions.
- Collaborate closely with union representatives to address attendance concerns, resolve disputes at the earliest step, and ensure adherence to contractual procedures.
- Coach operations supervisors and line managers on how to conduct effective, constructive attendance conversations that balance empathy with accountability.
- Prepare clear, objective, and comprehensive documentation of disciplinary actions to support the organization's position in union grievances or potential legal challenges.
- Analyze plant-wide attendance data, including AWOL, tardiness, and leave utilization trends, to identify patterns and recommend proactive interventions to reduce absenteeism.
- Administer the job abandonment process, including the 5-Day Quit procedure, ensuring all legal and contractual notices are accurately issued, tracked, and documented.
- Maintain meticulous records and files related to attendance, leaves, and disciplinary actions to support compliance, reporting, and audit requirements.
- Partner with HR, labor relations, and operations leaders to continuously improve attendance processes and support a productive, fair, and respectful workplace.
Essential Skills- Completed bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- At least 3 years of professional experience in Human Resources and/or Labor Relations.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to maintain professional composure, empathy, and authority under pressure.
- Proven conflict resolution skills, including the ability to negotiate mutually acceptable outcomes when appropriate and deliver difficult decisions decisively and professionally.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills, with the ability to maintain meticulous, accurate, and legally defensible documentation.
- Experience working with HR systems or Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data tracking, analysis, and reporting related to attendance and leaves.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, front-line, employee-facing HR role.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Prior experience working in a unionized manufacturing or industrial environment, preferably with exposure to UAW-represented workforces.
- Experience administering or interpreting collective bargaining agreements and supporting labor relations processes.
- Familiarity with FMLA, ADA, short-term disability, and related state and federal leave regulations.
- Experience using HRIS, timekeeping, or scheduling software such as TWOS, Oracle, SAP, or Kronos.
- Strong conflict management capabilities and experience handling sensitive employee relations issues.
- Ability to build trusted relationships with supervisors, line managers, and union representatives.
- Comfort working with large volumes of attendance and leave data to identify trends and inform decision-making.
Work EnvironmentThis role is 100% fully onsite within a fast-paced, dynamic manufacturing facility. The position follows a B-Crew afternoon shift schedule, requiring in-person work Tuesday through Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., with Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays as regularly scheduled days off. The work environment involves frequent interaction with hourly employees, supervisors, and union representatives on the plant floor and in office settings. The role relies on HRIS and timekeeping systems, including platforms such as TWOS, Oracle, SAP, or Kronos, as well as standard office software such as Microsoft Excel. The position requires sustained attention to detail, the ability to manage high-pressure and emotionally charged discussions, and a consistent presence on site to support front-line operations and employee needs.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Wayne, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $32.43 - $32.43/hr.
