About the Role

You will be building a simple, internal web application to track lab assets including testers, stations, boards, and chips. Engineers will use the tool to check in / check out equipment, see where assets are located, and identify who is currently using which tester or board. In addition to software development, you will help organize, label, and register existing lab inventory as part of the initial system rollout.

Overall, you will gain exposure to both software development and lab operations, own an end-to-end project from idea to deployment, and produce a strong, practical portfolio project with real impact

What Youll Build

  • Asset tracking for testers, stations, boards, and chips

  • Check-in / check-out workflow with full history (audit log)

  • Asset relationships (chip-on-board, board-on-station, station-on-tester)

  • Global search to quickly locate any asset

  • Simple status tracking (available / in-use / repair / retired)

  • Admin interface for adding and editing assets

  • Authentication for internal users: basic login or Google SSO

Deliverables

  • Working internal web application deployed for team use (on a single internal server or VM)

  • Organized and labeled initial lab inventory

  • Database schema and migrations

  • Core workflows: search, check-in/out, move, attach/detach

  • Deployed system usable by the team

  • Clear README and handoff documentation

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Work with lab engineers to inventory existing equipment

  • Physically organize and label lab assets (tags, names, locations)

  • Enter and verify initial asset data in the system

  • Help define naming and labeling conventions for lab equipment

Requirements:

  • Experience building a small web application (coursework or personal project)

  • Familiarity with Python

  • Basic understanding of SQL and relational data models

  • Comfortable using Git

  • Willingness to work both in software and in the lab environment

Nice to Have

  • Prior Django experience

  • Experience with internal tools or CRUD applications

  • Interest in hardware labs or engineering workflows

  • Detail-oriented and organized when working with physical equipment

Salary Range: $20 - $40 / hr
