Participants, known as apprentices, work under the supervision of experienced HVAC professionals while learning the skills needed to install, maintain, and repair HVAC equipment. The 'contractual' aspect means the apprentice typically enters into a formal agreement with an employer or union, outlining the terms of training and employment. These programs usually last 3-5 years and can lead to industry certification or journeyman status upon completion.
