The Mechanical Estimator position is a Full-Time, in-person position located in either our San Diego or Los Angelos, CA Office. In this role, you will be responsible for accurately determining the cost of mechanical projects, including HVAC, hydronic piping, and other mechanical systems. This person will collaborate with our sales team, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure projects are completed within budget and on schedule. A.O. Reed constructs various types of projects, including hospitals, laboratories, offices, hotels, and high-rise buildings.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct thorough reviews of project drawings, specifications, and contractual scopes of work to prepare comprehensive mechanical and piping estimates.
  • Execute precise material take-offs utilizing Trimble AutoBid for Sheet Metal and Hydronic piping (with plumbing proficiency preferred).
  • Determine and allocate requirements for manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontracted services based on project scale.
  • Establish and apply labor factors by evaluating site-specific conditions, work activity types, and historical performance metrics.
  • Perform detailed cost studies leveraging statistical analysis, historical data, and quantity comparisons to ensure pricing accuracy.
  • Obtain and analyze competitive quotes from suppliers and subcontractors to secure optimal pricing and project value.
  • Lead constructability reviews and proactively resolve documentation conflicts or ambiguities that may impact the estimate.
  • Facilitate formal bid reviews to finalize estimates, markups, and overall submission strategies.
  • Prepare professional pricing sheets, bid forms, and formal proposal documents in Excel and Word for executive review and submittal.
  • Develop and implement new techniques for piping and mechanical systems to meet unique project requirements and improve efficiency.
  • Manage the estimating database and maintain meticulous records of all bids, estimates, and related correspondence.
  • Partner with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure seamless communication and accurate cost assessments.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, fluctuating material costs, and emerging construction methodologies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
There are no direct supervisory responsibilities for this role.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five years of dedicated experience within the construction industry.
  • Five or more years of experience estimating technical commercial construction projects is strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of HVAC and piping systems.
  • Exceptional communication skills with a proven ability to produce high-quality work while managing multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
  • A collaborative team player capable of working effectively with minimal supervision and supporting colleagues with a positive, enthusiastic approach.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of project estimation and documentation.
