Position Summary

The Middle School Physical Education and Health Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-based instruction that promotes physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, personal wellness, and lifelong physical activity. The teacher creates a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment while helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to make healthy decisions and maintain physical well-being.


Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesInstruction
  • Plan and deliver standards-based physical education and health instruction aligned with Indiana Academic Standards.
  • Develop lessons that promote physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, personal responsibility, and healthy decision-making.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Incorporate a variety of individual and team activities that encourage lifelong fitness.
  • Teach health concepts including:
  • Nutrition
  • Mental and emotional wellness
  • Personal hygiene
  • Human growth and development
  • Substance abuse prevention
  • Safety and injury prevention
  • Disease prevention
  • Healthy relationships
  • Utilize technology and instructional resources to enhance student learning.


Student Learning
  • Assess student progress using a variety of formative and summative assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance.
  • Provide timely feedback to students and parents regarding academic and behavioral progress.
  • Use assessment data to improve instruction and student outcomes.


Classroom Management
  • Establish clear expectations for student behavior.
  • Maintain a safe and organized learning environment in the gymnasium, classroom, fitness room, locker rooms, and outdoor facilities.
  • Enforce school and district policies consistently.
  • Promote respect, teamwork, leadership, and positive sportsmanship.


Safety
  • Ensure all equipment and facilities are used safely.
  • Teach proper techniques for physical activities and exercise.
  • Supervise students at all times during instructional activities.
  • Report unsafe conditions or damaged equipment promptly.
  • Maintain current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications as required by the district.


Collaboration
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, counselors, nurses, and parents to support student success.
  • Participate in grade-level, department, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with families regarding student progress and wellness initiatives.


Professional Responsibilities
  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development, and required trainings.
  • Maintain professional licensure and certifications.
  • Stay current with best practices in physical education, health education, and student wellness.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical conduct.


Additional Responsibilities
  • Supervise students during assigned duties.
  • Assist with school events and activities as assigned.
  • Support extracurricular activities when appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.


QualificationsRequired
  • Valid Indiana Teaching License.
  • Appropriate licensure in Physical Education and/or Health.
  • Knowledge of Indiana Academic Standards for Physical Education and Health.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


Preferred
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification.
  • Experience teaching middle school students.
  • Experience integrating technology into instruction.
  • Coaching or extracurricular experience is preferred but not required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of adolescent growth and development.
  • Ability to motivate students with varying interests and abilities.
  • Strong instructional planning and assessment skills.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive and positive classroom culture.
  • Effective conflict resolution and behavior management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a professional learning community.


Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Demonstrate physical activities and exercises.
  • Lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to supervise active students during physical activities.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 184 days

Salary established by Master Contractual Agreement.
