Contractor information

What is a contractor?

Contractors are professionals or companies hired to perform specific tasks, projects, or services for clients, typically on a temporary basis and under a contractual agreement. Unlike regular employees, contractors are usually self-employed or work through an agency, manage their own taxes, and often provide their own equipment or tools. They may work in various industries such as construction, IT, or consulting, and are generally paid per project or by the hour. Contractors have more flexibility in choosing their work and schedules but do not receive employee benefits like health insurance or paid leave.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contractor, you typically need expertise in construction methods, project management, budgeting, and relevant licensure or certifications. Familiarity with tools such as project management software, estimating programs, and compliance systems is often required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help manage teams and client relationships effectively. These abilities are crucial to ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget while meeting client expectations and regulatory standards.

What do contractors do?

A contractor is a person who works on a construction site and is responsible for overseeing important details of a project. This could mean managing vendors, communicating information to all the workers on the site, reviewing documents and architectural plans to make sure the building is going according to plan, and managing the tasks of other workers. Contractors have extensive knowledge of the construction project that they are working on, regardless of its size and scale.

How do contractors typically coordinate with clients and other professionals during a project?

Contractors often serve as the central point of communication between clients, subcontractors, architects, and suppliers throughout a project. They regularly hold meetings to discuss project progress, address challenges, and ensure that everyone is aligned with the project goals and timelines. Effective contractors use project management tools and clear communication channels to keep stakeholders informed and projects on track. This collaborative approach helps prevent misunderstandings and promotes a smooth workflow, which is essential for delivering successful outcomes.

Job description

Party Chief - Independent Contractor (1099)
NexGen Enterprises | Fort Lauderdale, FL | Contract
Flexible Schedule • Project-Based Work • Competitive Pay - Submit Application or Call to Discuss
Who We Are
NexGen is a fast-growing land surveying firm expanding its footprint across Florida. We deliver boundary, topographic, construction, and geospatial services to title agents, real estate attorneys, and residential developers - and we do it with precision and professionalism. As our project volume grows, we're building a trusted network of independent Party Chiefs who want consistent work, professional collaboration, and the freedom that comes with contracting.
The Opportunity
This is a 1099 independent contractor role for experienced Party Chiefs who prefer the flexibility of contract work without sacrificing steady, meaningful projects. You'll work on a project-by-project basis alongside NexGen's licensed surveyors and project managers - operating with the autonomy of an independent professional and the support of an established firm behind you. We primarily utilize highly skilled one-man crews, but also accept two-man crews for the right projects.
What You'll Do
  • Perform boundary, topographic, construction staking, and control surveys independently
  • Operate GPS, Total Stations, and data collectors with accuracy and care
  • Interpret project plans, survey plats, and specifications to guide field activities
  • Collect and document clear, precise field notes and sketches for each project
  • Communicate proactively with NexGen project managers on progress and site conditions
  • Uphold safety standards and quality expectations on every job

What You Bring
  • 3+ years of field surveying experience, including independent or crew leadership roles
  • Strong proficiency with GPS, Total Stations, and data collection software
  • Solid understanding of survey principles, legal descriptions, and construction staking
  • A valid Florida driver's license with a clean record (fewer than 3 moving violations in 3 years; no DUI or reckless driving in 5 years)
  • Your own reliable transportation to and from job sites
  • High school diploma or GED; technical surveying training a plus
  • The ability to work independently outdoors in Florida's conditions - self-motivated and dependable
  • Strong communication skills and a professional, accountable approach to every engagement

Important Note: Independent Contractor Status
This position is classified as an independent contractor (1099). As a contractor, you are responsible for your own taxes, insurance, and equipment unless otherwise agreed upon in your contractor agreement. NexGen does not withhold taxes or provide employee benefits for this role. If you're looking for a W-2 employee position with full benefits, please see our Party Chief - Full-Time posting.
Compensation
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with your experience, skill level, and the scope of each project. We believe in paying contractors fairly for quality work - and we're straightforward about it.
To discuss pay rates, please:
  • 📄 Submit your application - include your experience and availability, and our team will reach out to discuss compensation.
  • 📞 Call our office - speak directly with someone on our team to learn more and ask questions before applying.
We respect your time and keep the conversation straightforward.
Why Partner With NexGen?
  • Consistent project flow: we have steady work and prioritize contractors we can count on
  • Professional collaboration: work with licensed surveyors and project managers who know the industry
  • Autonomy you've earned: we trust experienced professionals to run their jobs - minimal hand-holding
  • Growing firm, growing opportunities: as NexGen expands across Florida, so does the potential for ongoing contract work
  • Straightforward agreements: clear project scopes, honest communication, and timely payment
