The Youth Apprentice program provides high school students under the age of 18 with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and explore career pathways while earning wages. The Youth Apprentice works under the supervision of a qualified mentor to perform entry-level tasks and learn skills relevant to their chosen career field. This position complies with all federal and state child labor laws and safety standards.
Youth apprentices will assist with materials handling, installation of materials, devices, and equipment and maintains the work environment in a safe, neat, and orderly condition always. An apprentice must demonstrate safe work habits and proper care of tools and equipment. Safety is our #1 Priority, so a safe environment must always be maintained.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesJob Site Management:
- Handle and stage materials, equipment, and tools
- Identify and eliminate hazardous conditions at the job site
- Maintain the job site in a safe, neat, and orderly condition
Job Site Tasks:
- Assist with layout, wire pulls, and maintaining a safe environment
- Assist with cable tray installations, device installations, and lighting connections
Learning:
- Participate in structured learning experiences, both on-the-job and in the classroom (if part of a registered program)
- Shadow skilled employees to observe and learn specific skills
- Attend scheduled meetings, training sessions, or evaluations with mentor and program coordinator
- Communicate professionally with team members and supervisors
- Ask questions and seek feedback to support growth and development
Safety/Hazard Recognition & Elimination:
- Pre-plan and identify the methods to eliminate hazards daily by work task
- Execute skill in observing habits and hazards of others and bringing it to their attention
- Uphold safety as the most important goal of our Support goal of achieving zero accidents
- Promote and encourage open communication between field and office regarding all safety concerns
- Obtain safety training as expected by all company personnel - must use electronic devices to do this
- Be thoroughly familiar with company Safety Handbook
Qualifications and Requirements- This position requires a candidate who has a passion for hands-on work in outdoor and indoor environments which are dynamic and ever-changing.
- Must be currently enrolled in high school (typically ages 16-17)
- Parent/guardian permission and school approval required
- Demonstrated interest in career field (via coursework, career fairs,)
- Basic proficiency in communication, time management, and teamwork
- Willingness to learn and take direction
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities- Basic Industry Awareness
- Basic knowledge of safety rules and protocols, including proper attire, safe equipment use (age-appropriate), and emergency procedures.
- Familiarity with appropriate communication, behavior, and dress in a professional
- Basic knowledge of how to prioritize simple tasks and adhere to schedules or
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions clearly; can express questions, concerns, or ideas respectfully and
- Capable of listening attentively to supervisors, mentors, and coworkers to ensure understanding of tasks and
- Able to work cooperatively with others, accept feedback, and support a positive team
- Demonstrates punctuality, reliability, and the ability to keep workspaces and materials
- Maintains a positive attitude, shows respect for authority, and demonstrates appropriate behavior in a work
Physical Requirements- Ability to maintain a consistent workload that involves moderate manual labor
- Be productive while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Pass drug test, background check and occupation physical
- Good Color Acuity (determine wire colors)
- Must have the ability to get to the jobsite
