Job description

Fann Contracting, Inc., Northern Arizona's leading family-owned heavy civil and heavy highway contractor, is seeking an experienced Director of Accounting to join our executive leadership team in Prescott, Arizona.
For more than 65 years, Fann Contracting has built a reputation for integrity, performance, safety, and long-term relationships throughout Arizona. Our work includes mass excavation, rock handling, underground utilities, public and private infrastructure, asphalt paving, aggregate crushing, asphalt hot plant production, and related heavy construction services. We proudly serve ADOT, FHWA, BIA, city and county municipalities, and private residential and commercial clients throughout Arizona.
This executive-level position will lead the company's accounting and financial management functions while also overseeing IT administration and supporting HR-related business functions. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership ability, deep construction accounting knowledge, a practical business mindset, and experience working in a heavy civil, heavy highway, paving, aggregates, or construction materials environment.
The Director of Accounting will work closely with executive leadership to provide accurate financial reporting, strengthen internal controls, support strategic planning, improve systems and processes, and help guide the continued growth of the company.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the company's accounting, financial reporting, administrative, and related business management functions.
  • Prepare and present monthly financial reports, job cost reports, cash flow information, forecasts, and other key financial data to ownership and executive leadership.
  • Oversee financial statements, general ledger, accounts payable, cash receipts and disbursements, payroll coordination, tax reporting, audits, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance.
  • Manage construction accounting processes, including job cost accounting, equipment cost accounting, materials cost accounting, Work-in-Progress reporting, revenue recognition, project billing, and cost-to-complete analysis.
  • Analyze project estimates, budgets, billings, profit projections, production data, and actual financial performance to support project management and executive decision-making.
  • Oversee accounting related to asphalt paving, aggregate production, hot plant operations, equipment utilization, trucking, and related heavy civil construction activities.
  • Support and improve the use of construction technology systems, including Viewpoint Vista, HCSS HeavyJob, HCSS HeavyBid, and related software platforms.
  • Oversee IT-related administration, including technology systems, software platforms, vendor relationships, cybersecurity coordination, and technology planning.
  • Support HR-related business functions, including payroll coordination, employee benefits, personnel-related financial matters, policy administration, and compliance support.
  • Manage insurance-related matters, including employee benefits, workers' compensation, contracts, bonds, and related risk-management support.
  • Maintain familiarity with federally funded construction requirements, including Davis-Bacon, certified payroll, prevailing wage, ADOT, FHWA, and related compliance obligations.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, insurance providers, bonding companies, legal counsel, and other professional partners.
  • Recommend improvements related to financial planning, cost control, internal controls, department coordination, operational efficiency, and long-term growth.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and direction to accounting, administrative, IT, and HR support team members.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred; equivalent executive-level construction accounting experience will be considered.
  • 10+ years of construction accounting or financial management experience, preferably in heavy civil, heavy highway, paving, aggregates, construction materials, or a closely related industry.
  • Strong understanding of construction job costing, equipment costing, materials costing, WIP reporting, revenue recognition, billing, budgeting, forecasting, and financial controls.
  • Experience with federally funded construction projects, including Davis-Bacon Act requirements, certified payroll, prevailing wage, and related federal or state contracting requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, accounts payable, cash management, payroll taxes, tax compliance, audit preparation, and monthly financial reporting.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret construction contracts, project documents, insurance requirements, bonding documents, and compliance obligations.
  • Experience with Viewpoint Vista and HCSS HeavyJob/HeavyBid strongly preferred.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel and comfortable working with construction accounting systems, ERP systems, databases, and reporting tools.
  • Experience with insurance lines, workers' compensation, 401(k) administration, employee benefits, personnel management, and executive-level administrative responsibilities preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, written, verbal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented, self-directed, and able to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • CPA, CCIFP, MBA, or other advanced financial credentials are valued but not required.
Work Location and Physical Requirements
This is a full-time, in-office position based at Fann Contracting's headquarters in Prescott, Arizona. This is not a remote role.
The position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. The employee must be able to move throughout the office and access various departments as needed. Occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds may be required.
Compensation and Benefits

  • Performance bonus opportunity
  • Medical, dental, and life insurance
  • Paid vacation
