Are you a surety underwriting professional who thrives on building relationships, analyzing complex financials, and making smart, strategic risk decisions? Swiss Re Corporate Solutions is looking for a talented Contract Surety Underwriter to join our dynamic team in Woburn, Massachusetts - where your expertise will directly shape the growth and success of our surety portfolio.

About the Role

As a Contract Surety Underwriter, you'll be at the heart of our surety operations - evaluating risk, approving bonds, and cultivating the agent relationships that drive our business forward. This is a role where analytical rigor meets relationship-building, and where your decisions genuinely matter. You'll have real authority, real impact, and real opportunities to grow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite contract surety bonds in alignment with Swiss Re Corporate Solutions Surety Group underwriting guidelines, assessing risk acceptability and strategic fit
  • Manage daily bid and final bond requests, ensuring timely and accurate processing across your assigned territory
  • Review new contract bond submissions for completeness and compliance with Swiss Re Corporate Solutions Surety Group policies
  • Approve surety bonds within your assigned authority level, exercising sound judgment and underwriting discipline
  • Oversee the fiscal status of accounts, including in-depth analysis of annual accounting audits and internal financial statements
  • Maintain accurate documentation and credit information files in accordance with the Swiss Re Corporate Solutions Surety Group Procedure Manual
  • Build and enhance agency relationships - schedule regular meetings with established agents, visit bond accounts, and actively identify and secure new agent partnerships
  • Drive premium production growth by leveraging strong market knowledge and a proactive, client-focused approach
  • Provide quarterly marketing updates to the VP/Branch Manager and contribute to special projects as delegated
  • Attend regional meetings and represent the team with professionalism and expertise

About the Team

The Contract Surety team at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions is a dedicated group of underwriting professionals responsible for evaluating and approving contract bonds in accordance with our rigorous Surety Group policies. The team analyzes new account submissions across assigned territories, oversees the fiscal health of accounts, and maintains meticulous credit documentation - all while delivering exceptional service to our agent and contractor network. We are a collaborative, high-performing team that combines financial discipline with a strong market presence to deliver outstanding results.

About You

You are a confident, detail-oriented underwriting professional with a passion for surety and a talent for building lasting relationships. You bring strong financial acumen, excellent communication skills, and the ability to balance analytical thinking with a commercially savvy mindset. You're comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, and representing Swiss Re Corporate Solutions in the marketplace with energy and professionalism.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of contract surety underwriting experience, with demonstrated ability to assess and approve bonds within an assigned authority framework
  • Strong quantitative and financial analysis skills, including the ability to review and interpret financial statements, accounting audits, and credit information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, with the ability to manage documentation, reporting, and data analysis effectively

Additional preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in business, finance, or accounting - or equivalent professional experience
  • Proven track record in agency relationship management, including securing new agents and growing a book of business
  • Strong marketing and business development skills, with the ability to engage contractor clients and identify new opportunities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting updates and reports to senior leadership
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% to meet with agents and visit bond accounts

Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.

The estimated base salary range for this position in Midlothian VA is $156,000 to $234,000.
