What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract tax preparer?

To thrive as a Contract Tax Preparer, you need strong knowledge of tax laws and regulations, proficiency in preparing individual and business tax returns, and attention to detail, often supported by relevant education or experience. Familiarity with tax preparation software (such as Intuit ProSeries or Drake Tax), IRS e-filing systems, and sometimes certification like an Enrolled Agent (EA) or CPA, is typically required. Excellent client communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities set top performers apart in this position. These skills are critical for ensuring accurate, timely tax filings and maintaining client trust in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a contract tax preparer, especially during tax season?

As a Contract Tax Preparer, your work schedule can be highly variable, particularly during the busy tax season, which often runs from January through mid-April. You may work long hours to meet client deadlines, including evenings and weekends, but outside of peak periods, the role tends to offer greater flexibility and the possibility for part-time or remote work. Many contract tax preparers work independently or as part of a small team, allowing them to set their own schedules to some extent. Understanding these seasonal fluctuations can help you balance workload and plan your commitments effectively.

Job description

Contract Tax Preparer (1099) — Individual & Business Returns

Location: Remote-friendly (Must live in the USA) Type: Independent contractor (1099) · Seasonal with potential for ongoing work Start: Immediate

About the Role

A well-established, growth-oriented accounting and tax practice is seeking an experienced Contract Tax Preparer to support our individual and business return workload. This is a flexible, results-oriented engagement ideal for a seasoned preparer who values autonomy, clean processes, and working with a team that takes pride in accurate, high-quality work.

You will prepare and review returns, communicate clearly on open items, and help us deliver an excellent client experience during the season and beyond.

What You'll Do
  • Prepare federal and state individual returns (1040) and business returns (1065, 1120, 1120-S) with supporting schedules
  • Review source documents, identify missing information, and document open items
  • Apply current tax law accurately, including depreciation, credits, and multistate considerations where applicable
  • Communicate professionally on review notes and client follow-ups
  • Maintain organized, well-documented workpapers and meet engagement deadlines
What We're Looking For
  • Active IRS PTIN in good standing (required)
  • 3+ years of recent professional tax preparation experience
  • Comfort with individual and business returns across multiple states
  • Strong attention to detail and a track record of accurate, on-time work
  • Reliable remote-work setup and the ability to handle client data securely
  • Experience with Drake Tax software (preferred)
  • EA or CPA credential (preferred, not required)
Engagement Details
  • 1099 independent contractor; you set your own schedule within deadline windows
  • Volume and hours flexible based on capacity and season
  • Secure document access and clear workflow provided
  • Opportunity to continue with off-season and ongoing work for the right fit
Compensation

This is a per-return engagement, paid as a percentage of the preparation fee on each return you complete. The exact percentage is negotiated individually and reflects your experience and credentials, with stronger credentials (EA or CPA) commanding a higher split. Because our fees scale with return complexity, the same percentage earns you more on more involved returns.

How to Apply

Please submit a brief summary of your tax preparation experience, software proficiency, credentials (PTIN, and EA/CPA if applicable), and your availability/capacity in season and out of season.
