Job Description โ€“ Cardiac Surgical Technologist

Facility: Strong Memorial Hospital

Position Summary:

Strong Memorial Hospital is seeking an experienced Cardiac Surgical Technologist to support complex cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgical procedures in a high-acuity operating room. The Surgical Technologist will work collaboratively with cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, registered nurses, and the multidisciplinary surgical team to ensure safe and efficient patient care. Candidates must have recent Cardiac OR experience, be able to scrub and circulate, and hold NBSTSA certification (or have at least 10 years of Surgical Technologist experience). Cardiac transplant experience is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and maintain the operating room for cardiac and cardiothoracic surgical procedures.
  • Scrub and circulate during open-heart, cardiovascular, thoracic, and vascular surgeries.
  • Set up sterile instruments, surgical supplies, implants, and specialized cardiac equipment before procedures.
  • Anticipate the needs of surgeons throughout procedures by passing instruments, sutures, and surgical supplies efficiently.
  • Maintain a sterile field and strictly adhere to aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.
  • Assist with coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), valve replacement/repair, aortic procedures, heart transplant, ventricular assist device (VAD), and other complex cardiac surgeries.
  • Prepare and operate specialized cardiac equipment, including sternal saws, electrosurgical units, cell saver systems, and other cardiovascular instrumentation.
  • Perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse before, during, and after procedures.
  • Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, draping, and transfer while maintaining patient safety.
  • Ensure proper handling, labeling, and preservation of surgical specimens according to hospital protocols.
  • Inspect, clean, and prepare surgical instruments and equipment for sterilization after procedures.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, perfusionists, anesthesia providers, and perioperative nursing staff to ensure efficient surgical workflow.
  • Participate in emergency cardiac and trauma procedures as needed.
  • Document surgical procedures, implants, equipment usage, and patient care activities accurately.
  • Maintain compliance with AORN standards, hospital policies, Joint Commission requirements, and infection control guidelines.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives, continuing education, and competency training.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) Certification or a minimum of 10 years of Surgical Technologist experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent Cardiac Operating Room experience.
  • Ability to scrub and circulate in the operating room.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with cardiac transplant and advanced cardiothoracic surgical procedures.
  • Experience in a high-volume academic medical center or Level I Trauma facility.
  • Strong knowledge of cardiovascular instrumentation and sterile processing standards.
Schedule:
  • 12-hour shifts
  • 36 or 48 hours per week
  • Day/Evening/Night (D/E/N) rotation
  • Weekend, holiday, on-call, and emergency coverage may be required based on departmental needs.
