Contract Software Engineering Manager information

What is a Contract Software Engineering Manager?

A Contract Software Engineering Manager is a professional who leads and oversees software development teams on a contractual basis, rather than as a permanent employee. They are responsible for managing engineering projects, guiding developers, and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality software solutions. Typically, they work for a specific duration or on particular projects, providing leadership, technical expertise, and process improvements. This role is ideal for organizations seeking temporary management support or specialized leadership for critical projects. Contract Software Engineering Managers often bring diverse experience from various industries and projects.

What are some unique challenges faced by contract software engineering managers compared to full-time managers?

Contract software engineering managers often face the challenge of quickly integrating into new teams and company cultures while rapidly understanding ongoing projects. They must establish trust and effective communication in a short period, all while delivering results within limited contract timelines. Additionally, contract managers may need to balance stakeholder expectations and project deliverables without the long-term context or authority that permanent managers might have. Adaptability, strong onboarding skills, and proactive relationship-building are key to thriving in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Software Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Software Engineering Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, deep software development knowledge, and experience managing engineering teams, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, Scrum Master) is often required. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and conflict-resolution skills help build trust and drive team performance in diverse, dynamic environments. These competencies ensure timely project delivery, high code quality, and effective collaboration with stakeholders.

Our Cloud & Software Engineering teamย is looking for a professional like you with the skills and drive to make a real difference.

You will help originate and sellย digital and AIย delivery and modernization opportunities, shape client solutions, lead executive conversations, and provide technical oversight for delivery teams.ย

This role is designed for a leader who can move comfortably between client development, sales, solutionย design, delivery governance, and hands-on technical discussions. You will be based in Toronto and work closely with our Montreal-based delivery team as part of a single national practice. To support collaboration,ย team-building, and planning activities, occasional travel to Montreal,ย approximately twiceย per year, may be expected.

  • Build and manage a pipeline of software delivery, modernization, and AI-accelerated SDLC opportunities with Toronto-area clients.ย
  • Lead client conversations, discovery workshops, demos, proposals, solution shaping, and executive presentations.ย
  • Position KPMG offerings around software delivery transformation, custom development, cloud modernization, DevOps, and responsible Gen AI adoption.ย
  • Translate client business problems into practical delivery approaches, technical solution options, estimates, and commercial proposals.ย
  • Support statements of work, delivery plans, staffing models, pricing inputs, and risk assessments.ย
  • Provide technical oversight across delivery engagements to help teamsย maintainย quality, security, client alignment, and delivery momentum.ย
  • Partner with Montreal delivery leaders and technical teams to connect market demand with delivery capacity.ย
  • Coach managers, senior consultants, and consultants on client development, technical storytelling, solution design, and delivery excellence.ย
  • Stay current on industry and functional trends,ย includingย emergence of solutions thatย are relevant for KPMG clients.ย
  • Stay current on modern software engineering, AI-assisted development, platform engineering, cloud, DevOps, testing automation, and SDLC transformation trends.ย
  • Represent the team in internal account planning, alliance discussions, market development activities, and client-facing thought leadership.ย

What you bring to the role
  • 12+ years of experience inย digital transformation,ย software delivery, application modernization, technology consulting, solution architecture, or related fields.ย
  • Strong technical foundation acrossย projectย delivery, cloud platforms, architecture, DevOps, APIs, integration, data, security, and production operations.ย
  • Knowledge of ecommerce, content management (CMS), customer data platforms (CDPs) and / or marketing platforms (โ€˜Martechโ€™) would be an asset.ย
  • An appreciation of User Experience (UX) design, as well as the role of qualitative andย quantitaiveย research as a contributor to digitalย deliveryย would be an asset.ย
  • Experience selling, shaping,ย andย originating technology consulting work, including proposals, estimates, statements of work, and executive presentations.ย
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary delivery teams and managing senior client stakeholders.ย
  • Practical understanding of AI-assisted software delivery, Gen AI tooling, responsible AI adoption, prompt patterns, engineering automation, and AI-accelerated SDLC practices.ย
  • Highly polished and practiced presentation skills, with the ability toย representย KPMG to senior stakeholders with credibility and grace.ย
  • Ability to explain complex technical topics in clear business language and connect delivery choices to client outcomes.ย
  • Strong commercial judgment, relationship-building skills, and ability toย identifyย follow-on opportunities.ย
