What is a Contract Software Engineering Manager?

A Contract Software Engineering Manager is a professional who leads and oversees software development teams on a contractual basis, rather than as a permanent employee. They are responsible for managing engineering projects, guiding developers, and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality software solutions. Typically, they work for a specific duration or on particular projects, providing leadership, technical expertise, and process improvements. This role is ideal for organizations seeking temporary management support or specialized leadership for critical projects. Contract Software Engineering Managers often bring diverse experience from various industries and projects.

What are some unique challenges faced by contract software engineering managers compared to full-time managers?

Contract software engineering managers often face the challenge of quickly integrating into new teams and company cultures while rapidly understanding ongoing projects. They must establish trust and effective communication in a short period, all while delivering results within limited contract timelines. Additionally, contract managers may need to balance stakeholder expectations and project deliverables without the long-term context or authority that permanent managers might have. Adaptability, strong onboarding skills, and proactive relationship-building are key to thriving in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Software Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Software Engineering Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, deep software development knowledge, and experience managing engineering teams, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, Scrum Master) is often required. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and conflict-resolution skills help build trust and drive team performance in diverse, dynamic environments. These competencies ensure timely project delivery, high code quality, and effective collaboration with stakeholders.

Job description

Software Engineering Manager
Department: Technology
Employment Type: Permanent
Location: Boise, Idaho
Reporting To: Director, Engineering
Description
Highwire, a Veriforce company, is the Contractor Success Platform for asset owners, general contractors, and facilities managers. The world's most admired organizations use Highwire to ensure their contractors and subcontractors deliver great work, on budget and on schedule, by collaborating with them to dynamically mitigate safety, financial, quality, and sustainability risks during capital projects and facilities maintenance.
We were recently acquired by Veriforce a global leader in contractor and supply chain risk management. To support our continued growth, we're looking for an Engineering Manager in Boise to lead and develop a team of software engineers responsible for delivering reliable, high-quality products that help our customers operate more safely and efficiently. This is an exciting opportunity for a people-first engineering leader who enjoys building exceptional teams, partnering closely with Product and business leaders across the company, and creating an environment where engineers can do their best work.
As an Engineering Manager, you'll lead two engineering teams that build and enhance software used by organizations around the world. Your mission is to develop high-performing engineers, drive technical excellence, and ensure your teams can deliver on their roadmap.
What you'll do:
  • Lead and develop exceptional engineering teams. You'll coach, mentor, and develop a team of approximately eight engineers, creating an environment where people thrive and deliver their best work. As you grow within the organization, you'll have opportunities to take on additional teams and broaden your leadership impact across the engineering organization.
  • Partner closely with product and business leaders. You'll work alongside Product Managers and stakeholders to prioritize work, remove obstacles, and ensure engineering efforts align with business priorities and customer needs.
  • Drive engineering excellence. You'll establish and reinforce high standards for software quality, technical decision-making, and team performance while creating an environment where engineers are empowered to execute.
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships. You'll serve as the bridge between engineering, product, and business teams, translating technical concepts into clear business language and helping stakeholders make informed decisions.

Who you are:
  • People-first leader. You genuinely enjoy coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers. You measure your success by the success of your team and create an environment where people can grow and thrive.
  • Excellent communicator. You build strong relationships across technical and non-technical teams. Whether you're speaking with engineers, executives, product managers, or customers, you're able to communicate clearly and build trust.
  • Ownership-minded. You hold yourself and your teams to a high standard. You take responsibility for outcomes, proactively remove obstacles, and ensure quality and accountability remain central to everything your team delivers.
  • Technically credible. You have experience working with modern software development teams and enough familiarity with Java and Angular to confidently support technical discussions, ask thoughtful questions, and help your team make sound engineering decisions.
  • Quality-focused. You care deeply about building reliable, scalable software and fostering engineering practices that support long-term success rather than short-term fixes.

What you'll get in return:
Our benefits go well beyond the basics. To support your work-life integration, we built a benefits program that takes care of the whole person, including physical, mental, financial, and emotional health.
  • 100% employer-paid medical and dental insurance for employees
  • Monthly contributions to Health Savings Accounts
  • A 401(k) match that is immediately fully vested
  • Outstanding time off benefits
  • Paid time off for volunteer activities

All job offers will be contingent on the successful completion of a background check.
