What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Software Engineer (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Software Engineer (Remote), you need strong programming skills, experience with software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and collaboration tools such as Jira or Slack is typically required. Excellent time management, communication, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for remote work success. These competencies ensure high-quality, timely deliverables and effective remote collaboration across distributed teams.

What does a remote contract software engineer do?

A remote contract software engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications while working remotely, often on a project or time-limited basis. They are typically hired by companies for specific projects or to fill temporary skill gaps, and their work is governed by a contract that outlines the duration, deliverables, and payment terms. These engineers collaborate with teams using online tools, and their responsibilities can include coding, debugging, and participating in virtual meetings to ensure project success.

How do contract software engineers typically integrate with remote development teams?

As a contract software engineer working remotely, you'll often be onboarded quickly and expected to familiarize yourself with the team's tools, workflows, and codebase in a short time. Communication is key—most teams rely on daily stand-ups, regular check-ins, and collaborative platforms like Slack, Jira, or GitHub to keep everyone aligned. You'll likely work alongside full-time engineers, product managers, and designers, contributing to specific projects or milestones with clear deliverables. Proactivity in asking questions and sharing updates helps build trust and ensures smooth collaboration, even when working from different locations and time zones.

Job description

Overview:
Corporate Tools is hiring a Software Engineer. You will be a traditional company employee. This is a remote position, but if you're near one of our local offices, you're welcome to come hangout with us in-office as well. Our main offices are in Post Falls, ID, and Spokane, WA; we also have satellite offices in Austin, TX, and Salt Lake City, UT. You'll be working 40 hours a week and, of course, enjoy great company benefits.
At Corporate Tools, you'll join a tight-knit crew of engineers with wildly different backgrounds, experiences, and superpowers. Some of us spend our days crafting shiny new Rails applications, while others enjoy spelunking through legacy Rack apps and uncovering the hidden gems of Plain Old Ruby. We love trying new tools, technologies, and ideas-but we're not chasing trends for the sake of it. If it solves a real problem and helps the business, we're interested.
We're looking for someone who's excited to learn, eager to share what they know, and comfortable owning a project from start to finish. Our team knows that great engineers aren't all built from the same template. Some are CI/CD fanatics, some can make SQL sing, and some are happiest writing elegant Ruby all day long. While we all work across the stack, we also embrace the fact that everyone has their favorite corner of the playground.
One thing you'll learn quickly: we're nimble. Priorities can shift, new opportunities pop up, and sometimes the most important problem today wasn't even on the radar yesterday. We don't see that as chaos-we see it as an opportunity to make a real impact. If you enjoy variety, adapting on the fly, and tackling whatever challenge is most valuable in the moment, you'll fit right in.
Bring your strengths, grow your skills, and help us build great software alongside people who genuinely enjoy solving hard problems together.
What's in a title?
At Corporate Tools, we don't put much stock in titles. They're helpful for job postings, but once you're here, what matters is your impact, growth, and the unique strengths you bring to the team. We use levels instead of traditional titles because they give us more flexibility to support career development without forcing people into rigid boxes. Through regular conversations, you'll have clear expectations, opportunities to grow, and ongoing discussions about challenging work, progression, and compensation. Our goal is simple: create an environment where talented people can keep learning, taking on new challenges, and building a career that's meaningful to them. And if you'd like a traditional title for LinkedIn, post away.
Wage:
$90,000 - $140,000/year DOE
Benefits:
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental and vision for employees
  • Annual review with raise option
  • 22 days Paid Time Off accrued annually, and 4 holidays
    • After 3 years, PTO increases to 29 days. Employees transition to flexible time off after 5 years with the company-not accrued, not capped, take time off when you want
    • The 4 holidays are: New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Up to 6% company matching 401(k) with no vesting period
  • Quarterly allowance
    • Use to make your remote work set up more comfortable, for continuing education classes, a plant for your desk, coffee for your coworker, a massage for yourself... really, whatever
  • Open concept office with friendly coworkers
  • Creative environment where you can make a difference
  • No dumb benefits like free dog walking on the weekends that snobby hipster places have to make you feel cool, but mathematically won't cost the company much money because you won't use it
  • Trail Mix Bar oh yeah

Responsibilities:
  • Be a good human
  • Develop Software with Ruby, Javascript, and willing to learn and help out with our AWS infrastructure
  • Learn Ruby and Rails
