BAE Systems is hiring a Project / Ship Manager to support our Maritime Solutions business in Norfolk, VA. This role will lead the daily execution of a project/ship and members of the Ship Management team, which coordinate and direct the work of trades and subcontractors to perform work for the entire availability/contract.
The Project/Ship Manager has the responsibility to efficiently meet project safety, quality, schedule, and cost goals, while leading multiple area managers. You will work with multiple departments and processes to support production efforts across entire repair team to support work execution, problem solving, planning, and process improvement. You will be directly responsible for the efficient execution of work items and the conditions of the areas in which you are assigned. Performance for this position will be evaluated based on the success of the overall availability. Performance will be measured against predetermined safety, quality, schedule, and cost standards. This position reports directly to the Director of Programs.
The Ship Management team works directly with production, Program Managers, and all other support trades to eliminate obstacles in the way of project success.
The Project / Ship Manager will work directly with their peers in Finance, Supply Chain, Safety, Quality, Contracts, Sub-Contracts, and Craft Management teams to ensure:
  • Change is incorporated (timely and accurately)
  • Financial projections are in alignment with actual performance
  • Sub contracts are placed on time to support production efforts
  • Quality documentation is being actively managed to support project milestones
  • Sub-contractor relationships are maintain to support project milestones (in alignment with Program Manager)
  • Customer relationship is actively managed and fostered
  • Production is actively working the schedule, and performing within cost/budget goals
  • Monitor Non-Craft budget adherence for the entire avail

The Project / Ship Manager will maintain a symbiotic relationship with the project's Program Manager. Both individuals will work together to support the project overall, and develop solutions that ensure we are performing safely, at the requisite level of quality, on schedule, and on cost.
As a Project/ Ship Manager, you will:
  • Lead and facilitate teams through proactively addressing issues across multiple departments.
  • Provide training support across team/peers and interact with internal/external customers across the enterprise.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the entire operations team for their assigned ship.
  • Serve as a direct point of contact for all activity on the ship and have responsibility to direct production labor and support resources in order to successfully navigate the entire avail.
  • Utilize ship repair knowledge, team-first mentality, and positive attitude to drive success.
  • Lead teams and have links to production leadership to provide direction around adherence to safety, quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Maintain safe working conditions and housekeeping of all areas of the ship.
  • Coordinate Ship Management team daily; lead, coach, and hold team accountable to supporting efficient production efforts for timely execution of project.
  • Maintain/develop new processes and procedures to promote safe, efficient work execution
  • Work with the logistics, procurement, and materials team to communicate project demands for materials in alignment with the schedule.
  • Review quality key performance indicators to evaluate and identify opportunities for improvement across all trades working on project (Craft and Non-Craft).
  • Support efficient execution of production by removing barriers.
  • Identify corrective action for issues that develop daily throughout assigned area of responsibility.
  • Coordinate pier side logistics with material delivery, material protection, crane, and rigging teams to support schedule.
  • Coordinate the production and testing cycles to support availability and oversee TIP/OQE completion to support project quality requirements.
  • Monitor cost and schedule performance across all trades working within your assigned area through Earned Value Management system (at the Work Item and Activity Level), evaluate performance weekly, and develop mitigation plans with trades to resolve issues.
  • Manage subcontractor work execution on deck plates and work with sub-contract management team for contractual issues to resolve issues/delays.
  • De-conflict trade/subcontractor issues, in alignment with overall schedule goals.
  • Lead efforts to develop area management plans (work strategy, sequencing, temp services arrangements, etc.) with the facilities, planning, and production teams and support departments.
  • Exercise judgement in evaluating and proactively anticipating schedule and budget deviations.
  • Coordinate communication and feedback with customer (IDRs, CFRs, etc.) to resolve technical issues where additional guidance is required (PM operates at MARMC level; SM operates at Ship's Force level).
  • Understand and adhere to NAVSEA Standard Items (Repair) and commercial standards as required.
  • Address conflict in a collaborative working environment and support meetings and tasking as assigned by Program Manager/Director of Programs.
  • Support other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Skills and Education
  • Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of work experience or equivalent experience. May consider candidates with fewer years experience for a more junior position.
  • Experience in Government / Commercial New Construction Shipbuilding or Ship Repair.
  • Experience in managing cross-functional teams to deliver commitments.
  • Strong planning and project management skills, with knowledge of ship repair processes and sequences.
  • Ability to understand problems and to collaborate to explore identification of solutions.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize own work schedule on short-term, and/or long-term basis, both for self and others.
  • Ability to prioritize work projects and requirements and ability to develop concepts, plans, and work schedules and communicate them to others.
  • Ability to effectively use written and oral communication skills; interact with managers, staff, co-workers, and others encountered in the course of work; ability to compose materials such as detailed reports and work-related documents and communicate substantively about them either verbally or in writing; communicate interactively and make presentations effectively.
  • Ability to compute, analyze, and interpret numerical and/or statistical data for reporting purposes.
