What is a contract rotating equipment engineer?

A Contract Rotating Equipment Engineer is a specialized engineer who works on a contract basis to design, maintain, and troubleshoot rotating machinery such as pumps, compressors, turbines, and engines in industrial settings. Their responsibilities often include overseeing equipment installation, ensuring optimal performance, performing failure analysis, and coordinating maintenance schedules. They typically work for industries like oil & gas, power generation, and manufacturing, providing technical expertise on a project-by-project basis. Contract roles offer flexibility and exposure to varied projects, but may also come with less job security compared to permanent positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract rotating equipment engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Rotating Equipment Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, experience with rotating machinery (such as pumps, compressors, and turbines), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with industry standards (like API and ISO), engineering design software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), and condition monitoring systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help engineers coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure the reliable operation, safety, and efficiency of critical mechanical equipment in industrial settings.

What are some common challenges faced by contract rotating equipment engineers when starting on new projects?

Contract Rotating Equipment Engineers often encounter challenges such as quickly familiarizing themselves with the client's existing equipment, standards, and maintenance practices. They must adapt to diverse team environments and efficiently communicate with other engineering disciplines, vendors, and operations staff. Additionally, they are expected to deliver results within tight project timelines, often requiring rapid troubleshooting and decision-making to minimize equipment downtime.

What is the difference between Contract Rotating Equipment Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

Work EnvironmentOil & gas, power plants, industrial facilities, often on-site or project-basedManufacturing, design firms, R&D, office and plant settings
Employer & Industry UsageEnergy, petrochemical, industrial sectors; used by engineering contractors and companiesManufacturers, consulting firms, R&D labs across various industries

The Contract Rotating Equipment Engineer specializes in maintaining and troubleshooting rotating machinery like turbines and pumps, often working on-site in energy or industrial sectors. Mechanical Engineers have broader roles in design, analysis, and manufacturing across multiple industries. While both roles require mechanical engineering fundamentals, the Contract Rotating Equipment Engineer focuses more on operational reliability of rotating equipment in specific industrial environments.

Job description

Description:

This role focuses on the repair, rebuild, and testing of industrial pumps and rotating equipment. You'll work on a wide variety of equipment, diagnosing failures, rebuilding components, and supporting equipment repairs from tear-down through final testing. This role focuses on repair and rebuild work – not routine plant maintenance. Rather than performing preventive maintenance on operating equipment, you'll be involved in complete tear-downs, failure analysis, rebuilds, and remanufacturing work that restores equipment to OEM specifications.

About Tencarva

Tencarva is one of the largest and most respected distributors and OEM-authorized service networks in the pump and process equipment industry - 38 locations with over 18,000 active customers spanning 18 states. We provide equipment distribution, applications engineering, OEM-authorized repair, field service, custom fabrication, automation and controls, and other value-added services that support industrial, municipal water/wastewater, power generation, mining, chemical processing, and other critical industries. tencarva.com

Equipment You'll Work On

  • Centrifugal pumps (ANSI/API)
  • Vertical turbine pumps
  • Multistage pumps
  • Split-case pumps
  • Positive displacement pumps
  • Air-operated diaphragm (AODD) pumps
  • Gearboxes, blowers, valves, motors, and other rotating equipment

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Disassemble, inspect, troubleshoot, and diagnose failures in industrial pumps and rotating equipment
  • Perform complete tear-downs, repairs, rebuilds, and remanufacturing work to OEM specifications
  • Replace bearings, seals, shafts, impellers, wear components, and other repair parts
  • Perform laser alignment and other precision mechanical measurements
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, parts diagrams, manuals, and OEM documentation
  • Test, inspect, and verify equipment performance following repair completion
  • Perform limited manual machining as needed to support rebuild work
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-focused work environment

Why Tencarva

  • Day shift, Monday-Friday schedule
  • Annual incentive program
  • Quarterly shop performance incentives
  • Profit Sharing via 401(k)
  • Earn up to 120 hours (3 weeks) of PTO per year - plus 10 paid holidays
  • Tencarva is one of the largest and most respected distributors and OEM-authorized service networks in the pump industry
  • Stable, growing company with perennially strong financials and no history of layoffs
  • Long-term customer relationships with consistent demand for repair services
  • Big-company resources with a local-shop feel. Family-oriented culture that respects life outside of work
  • Realistic workloads and expectations – not a high-pressure production environment

Insurance benefits include medical, dental, vision, disability, and life

Requirements:

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years of hands-on industrial pump repair, rebuild, or rotating equipment service experience required
  • Ability to independently complete full tear-down and rebuild projects from inspection through final testing
  • Experience with centrifugal pumps, vertical turbine pumps, and related rotating equipment preferred
  • Manual machining experience strongly preferred (lathes, Bridgeport mills, boring mills, VTLs, etc.)
  • Familiarity with laser alignment and precision mechanical measurements
  • Basic manual machining experience is helpful but not required
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, parts diagrams, and repair documentation
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools, including micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators
  • Valid driver's license

We are looking for a reliable mechanic who takes ownership of their work, works well in a team environment, and takes pride in quality craftsmanship.

Key Skills: Industrial pump repair, pump rebuild, rotating equipment, centrifugal pumps, vertical turbine pumps, ANSI/API pumps, laser alignment, mechanical seals, bearings, shafts, precision measurement, remanufacturing.
