What is a contract robotics engineer?

A Contract Robotics Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and programs robotic systems on a temporary or project-based basis. They typically work with companies to create automation solutions, improve manufacturing processes, or develop new robotic applications. Unlike full-time employees, contract engineers are hired for specific projects and may work with multiple clients. Their responsibilities often include hardware design, software development, system integration, and testing. This role requires expertise in robotics engineering, programming, and problem-solving to deliver efficient and innovative robotic solutions.

What types of projects and daily tasks can a contract robotics engineer expect to work on?

As a Contract Robotics Engineer, you may work on a variety of projects, such as developing robotic automation for manufacturing lines, designing mobile robot prototypes, or troubleshooting existing robotic systems. Your daily tasks could include writing and testing control software, integrating hardware components, conducting system simulations, and collaborating with cross-functional teams like mechanical engineers or project managers. Assignments are often dynamic, requiring you to quickly adapt to new technologies and workflows. This variety offers opportunities to build diverse technical skills and make impactful contributions across multiple industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract robotics engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Robotics Engineer, you should possess strong proficiency in robotics systems design, programming (such as C++, Python, or ROS), and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with CAD tools, embedded systems, control algorithms, and, optionally, certifications like Certified Robotics Programmer are valuable assets. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and adaptability help individuals excel in contractor environments where teams and projects change frequently. These skills ensure you can efficiently deliver innovative solutions, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and navigate the unique demands of contract-based work.

Ann Arbor, United States | Posted on 08/05/2026

Vehicle Software Platform Engineer โ€” Ann Arbor, MI (Onsite) | W2 Contract (6 months) | $65โ€“$85/hr

Our client, a leader in autonomous and assisted driving, is hiring a Vehicle Software Platform Engineer to design and build scalable application and middleware components for nextโ€‘generation vehicle software systems. You'll develop core software modules, middleware, and integration layers that connect vehicle operating systems, compute platforms, and sensor data to high-level driving functions โ€” writing productionโ€‘quality C++ and Python that runs on inโ€‘vehicle systems.

What youโ€™ll do:
  • Design and implement applicationโ€‘and middlewareโ€‘level software features for advanced driving (AD/ADAS) and connected vehicle platforms.
  • Develop and maintain C++ and Python modules that interface with sensors, compute nodes, and vehicle systems.
  • Contribute to system integration, debugging, and optimization on Linuxโ€‘and QNXโ€‘based environments.
  • Set up or adapt build flows and related tooling.
  • Collaborate across software, hardware, and systems teams; participate in code reviews and release processes for production software.
What weโ€™re looking for:
  • 3โ€“5+ years of relevant software engineering experience.
  • Handsโ€‘on system software development (drivers, filesystems, sockets) on Linux and/or QNX.
  • Solid understanding of embedded software/systems and interfaces such as Ethernet and CAN.
  • Proven track record shipping production software in automotive, aerospace, defense, robotics, or a nearby embedded domain.
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting; a generalist who dives deep fast and learns continuously.
  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field highly preferred.
Details:
  • Location: Ann Arbor, MI โ€” onsite 5 days/week (no remote or relocation assistance).
  • Schedule: Full-time, approx. 9โ€“5/6, EST.
  • Engagement: 6-month W2 contract.
  • Pay: $65โ€“$85/hr.

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
