What is a contract RF filter design engineer?

Contract RF Filter Design Engineers are professionals who specialize in designing radio frequency (RF) filters on a contractual basis, rather than as permanent employees. They work with clients or companies to develop, analyze, and optimize electronic filters that control signal frequencies in RF systems, such as those found in wireless communications, radar, and broadcasting. Their work may involve using simulation software, prototyping, and testing to ensure filters meet specific performance criteria. These engineers often have expertise in electrical engineering, signal processing, and practical experience with various filter topologies. Contract roles can range from short-term projects to longer engagements, depending on the client's needs.

What are some typical challenges faced by a contract RF filter design engineer when joining a new project team?

As a Contract RF Filter Design Engineer, one common challenge is quickly adapting to different design methodologies and toolsets used by various clients. You may also encounter tight project timelines that require efficient problem-solving and rapid prototyping. Additionally, integrating your designs with existing system architectures and collaborating with cross-functional teams—such as hardware, testing, and manufacturing—can require strong communication skills to ensure all requirements are met. Being proactive in understanding client expectations and documentation standards is key to a smooth onboarding process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract RF filter design engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract RF Filter Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, expertise in RF/microwave filter theory, and experience with circuit simulation and design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with design and simulation tools such as ADS, HFSS, CST, and familiarity with network analyzers and CAD software is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills that set top engineers apart. These capabilities ensure the development of high-performance, reliable RF filters that meet stringent client and project requirements.

What is the difference between Contract Rf Filter Design Engineer vs Contract RF Circuit Design Engineer?

AspectContract Rf Filter Design EngineerContract RF Circuit Design Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning RF filters for signal integrity and frequency selectionDesigning RF circuits including amplifiers, mixers, and oscillators
Skills & CertificationsRF filter theory, simulation tools, relevant certificationsRF circuit design, PCB layout, simulation tools
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, telecommunications, aerospaceWireless devices, telecommunications, defense

While both roles involve RF design, the Contract Rf Filter Design Engineer specializes in creating filters to shape signal spectra, whereas the Contract RF Circuit Design Engineer focuses on broader RF circuit components. The choice depends on whether the project emphasizes filter performance or overall RF circuitry development.

Job description

Roguebeam RFIC Designer Seattle, WA·Full time Apply for RFIC Designer

Roguebeam is a startup developing advanced phased array systems for communications and radar applications. We design and manufacture complete systems in-house—RF, antenna, digital, and DSP—giving our engineers end-to-end ownership of the technology and a direct line of sight from algorithm to deployed system. We’re early, we’re growing fast, and the people who join us now will shape both the technology and the company.

DescriptionThe Role

We’re looking for an RFIC Engineer to design the advanced beamformer integrated circuits at the heart of our phased array solutions. As one of our early RFIC hires, you won’t just execute against a spec handed down to you—you’ll contribute to the architecture and design methodology behind our products and help shape how the team works as it grows.

You’ll own RFIC design from architecture through tape-out and bring-up, working shoulder-to-shoulder with antenna, digital, and DSP teams. The decisions you make will ripple through every product we build.

Responsibilities
  • Design RFIC beamformers and associated RF/mm-wave building blocks (phase shifters, attenuators, LNAs, PAs, mixers, switches) for phased array systems
  • Drive designs from specification and architecture definition through schematic, layout, tape-out, and silicon validation
  • Run circuit and system-level simulations covering linearity, noise, gain/phase control accuracy, and power
  • Collaborate with antenna, digital, and DSP teams to ensure RFIC performance meets full-system requirements
  • Support lab characterization, debug, and design iteration of fabricated parts
  • Contribute to design reviews, documentation, and the technical culture of a growing company
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in RFIC or RF/mm-wave circuit design
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design and simulation tools (e.g., Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre, ADS, and EM simulators such as EMX, HFSS, or Momentum)
  • Solid grounding in RF fundamentals: matching, noise, linearity, and S-parameters
Preferred Qualifications
  • MSc or PhD with a focus on RFIC design
  • Experience designing beamformers or phased array front-end ICs
  • Familiarity with mm-wave design and silicon technologies (SiGe BiCMOS, CMOS, GaAs/GaN)
  • Experience taking designs through tape-out and post-silicon validation
  • Background in communications or radar system requirements
Why Roguebeam

This is a rare ground-floor opportunity. Joining a startup at this stage means your work has a direct, visible effect on whether the company succeeds—and a corresponding upside as we grow. Because we build the entire system in-house, you’ll see your RFIC designs integrated into real phased arrays and deployed in working systems, not handed off and forgotten. You’ll have real ownership and a seat at the table on technical direction.

This position requires access to information controlled under ITAR/EAR; applicants must be U.S. persons as defined in 22 CFR 120.62
