What does a Contract RF Design Engineer do?

A Contract RF Design Engineer is a specialist hired on a temporary or project basis to design, develop, and optimize radio frequency (RF) circuits and systems. Their work typically involves tasks such as creating schematics, simulating RF performance, testing prototypes, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. They may work in industries like telecommunications, aerospace, defense, or consumer electronics, often collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver solutions that meet technical and regulatory requirements. Because they are contractors, their roles may be project-specific and vary in duration, focusing on providing expertise for particular phases of product development.

What is the difference between Contract Rf Design Engineer vs RF Systems Engineer?

Job Description and Requirements
We Are
Synopsys is the leader in engineering solutions from silicon to systems, enabling customers to rapidly innovate AI-powered products. We deliver industry-leading silicon design, IP, simulation and analysis solutions, and design services. We partner closely with our customers across a wide range of industries to maximize their R&D capability and productivity, powering innovation today that ignites the ingenuity of tomorrow.
As part of Synopsys, AGI (Ansys Government Initiatives) brings decades of expertise in Digital Mission Engineering. AGI's flagship product, Systems Tool Kit (STK), is trusted by aerospace, defense, and government organizations worldwide to model, analyze, and visualize complex systems and missions. By combining AGI's deep domain knowledge with Synopsys' scale and innovation, we empower our customers to design and test missions in a digital environment-accelerating discovery and reducing risk from concept through operations.
You Are
You're someone who has built your career at the intersection of advanced communications technology and hands-on testing. You can look at a complex RF or radar system and instinctively know where to probe first-and how to design a test that reveals the truth, not just what's expected. You thrive in multidisciplinary teams, picking up insights from software engineers, mission analysts, and fellow comms specialists, then translating those into rigorous test strategies that keep everyone honest.
You're comfortable toggling between high-level requirements and the nuts and bolts of RF and laser signal analysis. You don't just run test cases-you create them, automate them, and evolve them as products and challenges change. When a defect appears, you're the person who can dig into logs, trace data flows, and collaborate across functions to pinpoint root causes and drive resolution.
Mentoring comes naturally: you share knowledge, coach newer engineers, and raise the technical bar for everyone around you. You've contributed to commercial product releases and know what it takes to deliver reliable, field-ready solutions at scale. Above all, you care about making sure that the software and systems used for mission-critical modeling are tested as thoroughly as they are designed.
This position is based in Exton, PA and requires compliance with U.S. government security and/or access requirements. As a result, only U.S. citizens are eligible for this position.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Designing, specifying, and executing advanced test cases for RF communications and radar features within STK, including both manual and automated test frameworks
  • Developing and maintaining automated test scripts using Python, Perl and other test frameworks to increase coverage and efficiency
  • Leading verification efforts, including test planning, coverage analysis, defect management, and reporting of key metrics to stakeholders
  • Collaborating with product development, verification, and technical specialists to interpret requirements and ensure robust test strategies
  • Troubleshooting complex system issues across Windows, Linux, and virtualized environments, using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques
  • Supporting cross-team initiatives and sharing technical expertise to address system-level challenges in communications, radar, and mission analysis
  • Coaching and mentoring other Verification Engineers, contributing to team capability development and knowledge sharing
The Impact You Will Have
  • Raising the quality and reliability of STK's RF communications and radar modeling capabilities by designing and executing rigorous verification processes
  • Accelerating the release of new features and enhancements by improving automated test coverage and test efficiency
  • Reducing time-to-resolution for complex product issues by applying advanced diagnostics and cross-functional collaboration
  • Ensuring that mission-critical customers can trust STK for accurate, robust modeling in aerospace, defense, and other high-stakes domains
  • Shaping the evolution of verification practices within the Digital Mission Engineering business unit
  • Enhancing team performance by mentoring and developing the next generation of Verification Engineers
  • Contributing directly to the continued leadership of STK as the go-to platform for mission modeling worldwide
What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with 5+ years of relevant experience; or Master's with 3+ years; or PhD with 1+ years
  • Hands-on experience with RF communications and radar systems, including signal processing, data analysis, and modeling/simulation
  • Strong proficiency with scripting languages such as Python and MATLAB for test automation and data analysis
  • Demonstrated success leading verification efforts for commercial product releases
  • Experience with requirements management, defect reporting, and configuration management tools
  • Strong diagnostic skills for identifying and resolving software/system anomalies
  • Experience working across multiple computing environments (Windows, Linux, virtualized systems) is a plus
Who You Are
  • You can break down complex system requirements into actionable, testable scenarios that cover edge cases as well as the obvious paths
  • You're comfortable explaining a verification approach to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders, tailoring your communication to the audience
  • You proactively share what you learn-whether it's a new tool, a clever script, or a lesson from a product issue-with your team
  • You naturally take ownership of problems, driving them to resolution even when the path isn't clear
  • You're energized by collaboration, actively seeking input from colleagues in software, mission analysis, and comms to build better solutions
  • You adapt quickly to shifting project priorities and thrive in an environment where every release raises the technical bar
The Team You'll Be Part Of
You'll join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing STK (Systems Tool Kit), a commercial mission modeling software used by thousands worldwide. The team is composed of experts in communications, radar, software engineering, astrodynamics, and mission analysis, collaborating closely to deliver impactful solutions to some of the most challenging problems in aerospace, defense, and beyond. As a member of the Digital Mission Engineering business unit, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the product's direction, collaborating with peers, and ensuring STK remains at the forefront of innovation.
