Job Overview
Nova Space Solutions (NSS) is seeking an Electrical Maintenance Systems Engineer to provide reliable and responsive electrical engineering support for site assets and infrastructure at Naval Station Mayport. This position is responsible for improving system reliability, supporting maintenance operations, developing preventive and predictive maintenance programs, troubleshooting electrical systems, and providing engineering support for high-voltage power distribution, electrical infrastructure, and facility systems.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties:
  • Establish and implement reliability engineering principles and best practices in accordance with the Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) or equivalent standards.
  • Utilize Maximo to manage maintenance activities and support preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Develop preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, overhaul, and repair procedures for electrical systems and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) standards and the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Test, troubleshoot, perform root cause failure analysis, develop corrective action plans, and implement solutions to eliminate repeat equipment failures.
  • Manage upgrades, maintenance, and troubleshooting of AC and DC variable speed drives, motors, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), motor controls, motor control centers, and machine interface software.
  • Develop, maintain, and update plant electrical drawings and system documentation.
  • Test, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical equipment, including:
    • 480V substations
    • Transformers
    • Switchgear
    • Vacuum breakers
    • Protective relays
    • Power controls and distribution equipment
    • Current transformers
    • Potential transformers
    • Battery systems
    • Power line carrier systems
  • Perform relay calibration and maintenance and repair substation relays and control schemes.
  • Monitor plant high-voltage electrical operations, coordinate system lineups, and interface with plant operations.
  • Develop electrical switching orders and establish electrical safe work zones.
  • Interpret short circuit, arc flash, load flow, and relay coordination studies and determine appropriate PPE requirements.
  • Provide 24/7 engineering support for electrical system failures and coordinate restoration efforts using internal and contract resources.
  • Investigate and provide detailed analysis of high-voltage electrical incidents.
  • Lead the design, installation, rebuilding, and commissioning of electrical equipment, including high-current rectifier systems, transformers, high-voltage switchgear, transmission lines, and metering systems (13.8kV and 480V).
  • Perform and interpret motor circuit analysis, transformer oil analysis, electrical testing, and substation maintenance data.
  • Interpret mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic drawings.
  • Conduct electrical power studies to evaluate power quality, system capacity, and facility expansion requirements.
  • Conduct lighting studies to evaluate existing facility lighting levels.
  • Determine shore power configurations, generator sizing, battery systems, charging systems, grounding requirements, and galvanic protection requirements for AC and DC electrical systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical infrastructure and facility systems.
  • Balance project scope, schedule, and budget to achieve successful project execution.
  • Work collaboratively with operations, maintenance personnel, contractors, customers, and client representatives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of electrical maintenance practices, testing methods, power system protection, and diagnostic technologies.
  • Maintain professional communication and documentation supporting engineering activities.

Job Requirements
Mandatory:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution or ten (10) years of related electrical engineering experience.
  • Must obtain Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) certification within one year of employment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Maximo, including assets, preventive maintenance, job plans, routes, and reporting.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to obtain the required NASA badge.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Valid state-issued enhanced driver's license.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to balance scope, schedule, and budget to ensure project success.
  • Ability to work effectively with personnel at all organizational levels, customers, and client representatives.

Preferred:
  • ISO Category II (or higher) certification in ultrasonic or infrared condition monitoring.
  • Experience with condition monitoring software and predictive maintenance technologies.
  • Experience with high-voltage electrical distribution systems, substations, and protective relay systems.
  • Experience with arc flash, relay coordination, and power system studies.
  • Experience supporting industrial, military, or government facilities.

Working Conditions:
  • Office Environment (50-65%).
  • Test Environment - May be exposed to areas of high noise levels hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals and industrial facilities (50%). Travel between facilities and test sites is required (25%).

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist and sit for extended periods as well as climb, crawl, and lift to 35 lbs.
