What is a Contract Quantitative Researcher?

A Contract Quantitative Researcher is a professional who is hired on a temporary or project basis to analyze data, develop models, and apply mathematical and statistical techniques to solve problems, usually in finance, technology, or scientific research. Unlike full-time employees, contract quantitative researchers work on specific assignments and often bring specialized expertise to organizations. Their work can include developing trading algorithms, risk models, or conducting data-driven research to inform business decisions. They typically have advanced skills in mathematics, programming, and data analysis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Quantitative Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Quantitative Researcher, you typically need strong analytical skills, a background in mathematics or statistics, and experience with data modeling and analysis. Proficiency with programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB, as well as familiarity with statistical software and data visualization tools, is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and clear communication help set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate, actionable insights and effective collaboration with stakeholders to drive data-driven decisions.

What is the difference between Contract Quantitative Researcher vs Contract Data Analyst?

AspectContract Quantitative ResearcherContract Data Analyst
Required CredentialsTypically requires a master's or PhD in quantitative fields, statistics, or related areasUsually requires a bachelor's or master's in data science, statistics, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch-focused, often in finance, academia, or market research firmsData-focused, working in various industries like marketing, finance, or tech companies
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in finance, consulting, and research institutionsWidespread across industries including finance, healthcare, and technology

Contract Quantitative Researchers and Contract Data Analysts share overlapping skills in data analysis and statistical methods. However, Quantitative Researchers focus more on developing models and conducting in-depth research, often requiring advanced degrees, while Data Analysts typically handle data processing and reporting tasks. Both roles are vital in data-driven industries but differ in scope and complexity.

What are some typical projects or tasks a Contract Quantitative Researcher might handle during an engagement?

As a Contract Quantitative Researcher, you may be tasked with developing and backtesting trading algorithms, analyzing large financial datasets to identify patterns, or designing statistical models for risk management. Projects often involve close collaboration with traders, data engineers, and other researchers to translate business needs into actionable research. Since engagements are contract-based, you might work on focused, high-impact projects requiring quick onboarding and the ability to deliver results independently or as part of a small, agile team.

As a Contract UX Researcher, you will support a research portfolio focused on developing next-generation wearable research hardware. This role will work closely with research, product, industrial design, and hardware teams to help ensure new technologies are physically wearable, comfortable, and inclusive across a diverse human population.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Plan and execute hands-on fit, comfort, and anthropometry studies, including 3D head scanning, prototype wear testing, fit surveys, and human-subject measurement studies.
  • Design and run rapid, iterative validation studies against hardware targets such as weight, display geometry, and frame dimensions to inform design, CAD-lock, and fabrication decisions.
  • Build, maintain, and document anthropometry data pipelines and databases that support industrial design and hardware decision-making.
  • Apply quantitative research methods, including measurement, statistical analysis, and modeling of anthropometric and fit data, to define and support product design hypotheses.
  • Collaborate closely with UX Research leadership, Industrial Design, Product, Engineering, and other hardware partners to translate research findings into device geometry, comfort, and fit decisions.
  • Independently and collaboratively develop and execute research roadmaps across multiple concurrent fit and comfort studies.
  • Partner with research vendors, research assistants, and external partners to expand data collection and analysis capacity.
  • Communicate findings clearly through storytelling, data visualization, and research documentation for technical audiences, including design and engineering stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in a human behavior, design, or quantitative-related field such as Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Biomechanics, Anthropometry, Psychology, Statistics, Information Science, Computer Science, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience conducting UX research, human factors research, usability testing, interviews, surveys, or other human-subject research methods.
  • Strong quantitative research skills, including comfort with measurement, statistics, structured data analysis, and research data interpretation.
  • Experience designing, cleaning, and analyzing surveys or structured study data, ideally using tools such as Qualtrics, Excel, R, Python, SPSS, SQL, Tableau, Looker, or similar platforms.
  • Hands-on data collection experience, ideally involving hardware, physical products, wearables, biometrics, 3D scanning, or human measurement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate research findings into actionable recommendations for product, design, and engineering teams.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and support multiple concurrent studies in a fast-moving and ambiguous research environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Biomechanics, Anthropometry, Psychology, Statistics, Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with wearable hardware, AR/VR devices, smart glasses, consumer electronics, medical devices, or other physical products.
  • Experience with 3D scanning technologies for anthropometry, such as head scanning, body scanning, 3dMD, 3dSE, Arc7, or similar tools.
  • Experience assessing population fit, comfort, ergonomics, or anthropometric variation for wearable hardware.
  • Experience working with Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Product, or R&D teams.
  • Experience building or maintaining research databases, data pipelines, or structured research repositories.
  • Experience using storytelling and data visualization to influence technical audiences and support hardware or product decisions.
