Unlike full-time or part-time staff, PRN nurses have a flexible schedule and may work in various settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities. They are usually hired for short-term needs, such as covering staff shortages or seasonal demand. Contract PRN RNs may earn a higher hourly wage but typically do not receive benefits like full-time employees.

To excel as a Contract PRN RN, you must possess current RN licensure, strong clinical assessment abilities, and a solid understanding of medical procedures, often complemented by recent acute care experience. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and up-to-date certifications such as BLS or ACLS are commonly required. Excellent time management, adaptability to new environments, and clear communication enable success in this flexible, on-demand role. These skills ensure you can provide high-quality patient care while effectively integrating into various healthcare teams on short notice.

What are the typical scheduling and work expectations for a Contract PRN RN position?

Contract PRN RNs are usually hired to fill staffing gaps on an as-needed basis, which means shifts can vary widely in length, frequency, and timing.
