What is a Contract PRN RN?

A Contract PRN RN (as-needed Registered Nurse) is a nurse who works on a contractual basis, typically filling in shifts as required by healthcare facilities. Unlike full-time or part-time staff, PRN nurses have a flexible schedule and may work in various settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities. They are usually hired for short-term needs, such as covering staff shortages or seasonal demand. Contract PRN RNs may earn a higher hourly wage but typically do not receive benefits like full-time employees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract PRN RN position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract PRN RN, you must possess current RN licensure, strong clinical assessment abilities, and a solid understanding of medical procedures, often complemented by recent acute care experience. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and up-to-date certifications such as BLS or ACLS are commonly required. Excellent time management, adaptability to new environments, and clear communication enable success in this flexible, on-demand role. These skills ensure you can provide high-quality patient care while effectively integrating into various healthcare teams on short notice.

What are the typical scheduling and work expectations for a Contract PRN RN position?

Contract PRN RNs are usually hired to fill staffing gaps on an as-needed basis, which means shifts can vary widely in length, frequency, and timing. Flexibility is essential, as assignments may be scheduled with short notice, including nights, weekends, or holidays, depending on facility needs. Work environments can range from hospitals and clinics to long-term care settings, and you may work with different teams each shift. While this arrangement provides the opportunity to gain diverse experience and maintain a flexible work-life balance, it also requires adaptability and strong self-motivation.

Job description

Pay: $45.00 – $50.00 per hour
Position Type: PRN / As-Needed / Registered Nurse / Day & Night Shift

Vital Medical Staffing is looking for dependable, compassionate Registered Nurses (RNs) to join our PRN team. This position is ideal for nurses who value flexibility, communicate well, and take pride in showing up when patients and facilities truly need support.

We partner with hospitals, long-term care facilities, behavioral health settings, and clinics. Because of that, no two shifts look exactly the same. Many of our assignments are PRN and last-minute coverage needs, so we're looking for nurses who are reliable, adaptable, and comfortable stepping into different environments while maintaining excellent patient care.

As a PRN RN with Vital Medical Staffing, you'll be responsible for providing safe, professional nursing care within your scope of practice. This includes administering medications and treatments, monitoring patient conditions, documenting care accurately, and communicating clearly with facility staff. You'll be expected to work independently when needed while still collaborating with the care team and following each facility's policies and procedures.

Reliability matters a lot in this role. Our facilities depend on us to send nurses who show up on time, prepared, and ready to work. Clear communication with our staffing team is also important, especially when accepting or declining shifts and reporting any concerns during an assignment.

What you'll need to qualify:
• Active and valid RN license
• Current TB test
• Active CPR/BLS certification
• CPR/BLS must be instructor-led and in person (online-only certifications are not accepted)
• Reliable transportation
• Strong communication skills
• Compassion for patients and a genuine heart for healthcare
• Ability to work PRN and accept last-minute shifts when available
• ICU, Critical Care, or Step-Down experience preferred

Why nurses choose to work with Vital Medical Staffing:
We offer flexible PRN scheduling so you can pick up shifts that work with your life. You'll have access to a variety of facilities and settings, which keeps things interesting and helps you build experience across different environments. Most importantly, you'll have support from a staffing team that actually cares about you - we communicate clearly, advocate for our nurses, and do our best to make sure you feel prepared before each shift.

This role is a great fit for nurses who enjoy flexibility, take pride in being dependable, and want to make a real difference when coverage is needed most.

If you're an RN who cares about patients, communicates well, and can be counted on when it matters, we'd love to hear from you.
