Contract Prn Rn information

What is a Contract PRN RN?

A Contract PRN RN (as-needed Registered Nurse) is a nurse who works on a contractual basis, typically filling in shifts as required by healthcare facilities. Unlike full-time or part-time staff, PRN nurses have a flexible schedule and may work in various settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities. They are usually hired for short-term needs, such as covering staff shortages or seasonal demand. Contract PRN RNs may earn a higher hourly wage but typically do not receive benefits like full-time employees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract PRN RN position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract PRN RN, you must possess current RN licensure, strong clinical assessment abilities, and a solid understanding of medical procedures, often complemented by recent acute care experience. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and up-to-date certifications such as BLS or ACLS are commonly required. Excellent time management, adaptability to new environments, and clear communication enable success in this flexible, on-demand role. These skills ensure you can provide high-quality patient care while effectively integrating into various healthcare teams on short notice.

What are the typical scheduling and work expectations for a Contract PRN RN position?

Contract PRN RNs are usually hired to fill staffing gaps on an as-needed basis, which means shifts can vary widely in length, frequency, and timing. Flexibility is essential, as assignments may be scheduled with short notice, including nights, weekends, or holidays, depending on facility needs. Work environments can range from hospitals and clinics to long-term care settings, and you may work with different teams each shift. While this arrangement provides the opportunity to gain diverse experience and maintain a flexible work-life balance, it also requires adaptability and strong self-motivation.

Daytime only. No nights. No weekends.

Vellum offers a competitive, performance-driven compensation model with strong earning potential supported by consistent regional infusion volume.
Highlights include:

• Competitive "per infusion" base pay
• Mileage reimbursement

• Additional compensation for extended mileage, and onsite coverage
• Specialty pay for blood transfusions and lab services
Key Responsibilities
*Must be available to work a minimum of ONE set day per week to accommodate facility schedules

• Administer IV medications, hydration therapy, and specialty infusions
• Perform blood transfusions (training available for ACLS nurses)
• Monitor patient responses and manage infusion-related reactions
• Access and maintain PIVs, ports, and PICCs (no line placement required)
• Complete documentation using our mobile web platform
• Provide updates to providers and facility staff
• Support education for patients and facility nursing staff as needed
Requirements

• Active Texas RN license
• ER or ICU experience strongly preferred
• 1+ year IV or infusion experience preferred
• Current BLS
• ACLS preferred — ACLS nurses may cross-train for blood transfusion competency
• Valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle
• Ability to travel between multiple facilities in the South Texas region
• Comfortable using mobile documentation tools
*Must be available to work a minimum of ONE set day per week to accommodate facility schedules
Why Join Vellum Health?

• Monday–Friday schedule
• Consistent caseload across multiple facilities

Opportunities for career growth, especially as the region expands
