Job description

Farnsworth Group is seeking a Power Transmission amp; Distribution Engineer/Project Manager to join our growing consulting team at any of the locations listed below. You will be responsible for leading power industry projects from concept through completion, with a focus on electric transmission and distribution design. This role requires strong client-facing skills, project financial ownership, and the ability to manage interdisciplinary engineering and construction activities to design, analyze and modernize power infrastructure.
Posting Locations: Belleville, Lisle, or Chicago, IL; or St. Louis, MO
What You’ll Do:
  • Build, maintain, and grow client relationships, support business development and proposal development
  • Serve as the primary client contact, ensuring communication, alignment, and high‑quality delivery
  • Lead and manage transmission, distribution and substation projects from planning through closeout, including route selection, siting, surveying, permitting, engineering, estimating, and construction coordination
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and coordination across multi-disciplinary teams (electrical, civil, survey, environmental, structural)
  • Prepare and/or oversee project schedules, budgets, forecasting, scope, risk management, change management, and staffing
  • Develop engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates and implement project execution plans, project controls, and QA/QC processes
  • Perform transmission and distribution system design (overhead amp; underground) including distribution equipment, feeder replacement, cable replacement, and new feeder installation
  • Prepare substation design packages including siting, physical equipment arrangements, and equipment designs such as buswork, transformers, breakers, isolators, protective relaying systems, and grounding systems
  • Conduct line routing, load flow, short circuit, and coordination studies as well as voltage drop, sag-tension, wire selection, and pole loading calculations
  • Provide technical input during client meetings and presentations as well as internal design team meetings

What You’ll Need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited institution, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology or construction management from an ABET accredited institution
  • 7+ years of T amp;D experience in consulting or utility environments
  • 3+ years managing power industry projects
  • Working knowledge of industry design standards, including NESC, IEEE, NERC and relevant utility standards
  • Proficiency in tools such as ETAP, SKM, CYME, PLS-CADD, or similar
  • Design experience and working knowledge of 69kV to 500kV systems preferred
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to present complex information to internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project financials, forecasting, scope, schedules, contracts, and risk
  • Proven success developing client relationships and leading multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license and/or PMP Certification preferred
