Job description

In this rewarding role as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS), you'll make a direct impact by empowering students with visual impairments to build independence and confidence in their school environment and the community. Your expertise will support learners in navigating safely and confidently, making a meaningful difference in their daily lives.
Qualifications:

  • Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
  • Experience working with children or young adults in educational settings
  • Strong understanding of orientation and mobility techniques, including the use of assistive devices
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for coordinating with educators, families, and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to develop and adjust individualized mobility programs
  • Compassion and patience in working with students with visual impairments
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assess students' needs and develop personalized orientation and mobility training plans
  • Provide direct instruction in safe and effective travel skills within school settings and nearby community areas
  • Train students in the use of canes, low vision devices, and other adaptive technology
  • Educate and collaborate with school staff and family members to support student independence
  • Monitor and document student progress, adjusting strategies as needed
  • Participate in IEP meetings and provide recommendations for mobility-related goals
  • Stay current with best practices and advancements in the field
