What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Next.js Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Next.js Developer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript, React, and Next.js, along with a solid understanding of web development fundamentals and experience in delivering client projects. Familiarity with tools like Git, RESTful APIs, Vercel, and related front-end technologies, as well as a proven portfolio or certifications, is often expected. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you adapt to client needs and collaborate effectively in remote or cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality, scalable web applications on time and meeting client expectations in a fast-paced contract environment.

What are Contract Next.js Developers?

Contract Next.js Developers are software engineers who specialize in building web applications using the Next.js framework on a contract basis. They are typically hired for specific projects or timeframes to develop, maintain, or enhance web applications, often focusing on server-side rendering, static site generation, and optimizing React applications. These developers are skilled in JavaScript, React, and related web technologies, and may work remotely or onsite depending on the client’s needs. Their contract status means they are not permanent employees but are engaged for particular tasks or durations.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Next.js Developers when joining new projects?

Contract Next.js Developers often encounter challenges such as quickly understanding existing codebases, adapting to diverse development standards, and integrating their work with remote or cross-functional teams. Since contract roles typically have shorter onboarding periods, developers must rapidly familiarize themselves with project requirements, deployment processes, and the team's workflow tools. Proactive communication and strong problem-solving skills are essential to ensure smooth collaboration and timely delivery of features.

Job description

Accelerate Your Career!

Explore the Product Apex application here.

Before you proceed to the application, please prepare your 3–5 minute "Apex Pitch" video. See examples from current Carvana employees here.

Your video should be a short walkthrough of what led you to apply and how you went about solving a specific problem using technology. We don't expect high production value, we just want the real you.

Please address these three areas:

  1. The "Why": Why Carvana, and why join us at this specific moment?
  2. The Track: Why is Software Engineering the right fit for your skills?
  3. The Build: Walk us through an AI-driven application or solution you've personally built. It can be any project—personal, for school, an internship, etc.
    • Show us what you built and explain the thought-process behind specific decisions you made along the way.
    • Detail exactly how AI played a role in building it—planning, writing code, etc.
    • Use a screen-recording tool and walk us through your prompt creation, documentation, code, or other specific artifacts while you discuss.
    • We are interested in your creative process and problem-solving steps rather than a product demonstration.

How to Record & Share

You can use any tool you like, but our favorites for tech demos allow us to see your face and your screen while you share:

  • Loom (Recommended): Great for "picture-in-picture" recordings of you and your screen.
  • Camtasia or Clipchamp: Best if you want to edit multiple takes together.
  • Zoom: Use "shared screen with speaker view."

Ensure your video is uploaded to a cloud service such as YouTube or Google Drive and set to "Public," Unlisted," or "Anyone with the link can view." Test your link in an Incognito or Private browser window before submitting to make sure we can see it.

  • Logistics & Robotics: Managing a nationwide fleet and enterprise-grade automation for the largest reconditioning facilities in the US.
  • AI Developer Experience: Early adoption of AI tools to optimize our own developer efficiency.

What you'll experience and deliver as part of our inaugural cohort

  • Contribute to Scale: Own medium-to-large projects with cross-functional impact.
  • Write Elite Code: Develop scalable, testable, and modularized solutions.
  • Master the Stack: Work with cloud systems (Azure), Kafka for real-time streaming, and Kubernetes for scaling.
  • Collaborate: Use Agile methodologies to design new features alongside Product and Design. You will be part of a cohort that learns together, and also part of a core team of experienced developers.
  • Stay Ahead: Explore new technologies and approaches to bring Carvana's engineering to the next level.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Experience: 0–3 years of software development experience.
  • Tech Stack: Proficiency in C# / .NET Core (GraphQL/RESTful via Web API) and Azure services OR JavaScript / TypeScript (React Hooks, Next.js, Nx).
  • Fundamentals: Strong skills in unit testing, debugging, and API integrations.
  • Mindset: A positive attitude, a willingness to be flexible, and a deep hunger to learn.

About Carvana

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

At Carvana, we sell cars, but we're not salespeople. Since 2013, we've been making it our mission to change the way people buy cars. We saw a huge problem with how much it can suck to buy a car the traditional way, so we committed ourselves to tackling one of the largest, yet-to-be-disrupted markets in the world - the $1T per year U.S. car market (yes, that's $Trillion with a "T").
