Contract Navy Software Engineer information

What is a contract Navy software engineer?

Contract Navy Software Engineers are professionals who work on a contractual basis to develop, maintain, and improve software systems used by the Navy. They are typically employed by private companies that have contracts with the Navy, rather than being enlisted military personnel. Their work can include creating embedded systems, cybersecurity solutions, data analysis platforms, or software for shipboard and shore-based operations. These engineers must meet specific security clearance requirements and often need to be familiar with Department of Defense (DoD) standards and protocols. Their contributions are critical to ensuring the reliability and security of Navy technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract Navy software engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Navy Software Engineer, you need expertise in software development, systems engineering, and a solid understanding of defense or military protocols, with at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with secure coding practices, DoD-approved development environments, and certifications such as Security+ or CISSP are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating on complex, mission-critical projects. These skills and qualifications ensure that software solutions are reliable, secure, and meet stringent Navy operational requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by contract Navy software engineers when working on defense projects?

Contract Navy Software Engineers often encounter unique challenges such as navigating strict security protocols, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements, and integrating new software with legacy naval systems. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including military personnel and civilian contractors—requires clear communication and flexibility. Successfully managing these challenges not only ensures project success but also builds valuable experience for advancing to more senior or specialized defense engineering roles.

Summary

New Venture Research Corporation (NVRC) is a leading provider of innovative technology solutions supporting critical defense programs.

NVRC is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to support the design, development, testing, and sustainment of mine warfare systems and related undersea/surface hardware. This position works on-site at NSWC PCD alongside government engineers, program office personnel, and fleet stakeholders on the full lifecycle of mine warfare software, from concept through fleet introduction and in-service support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications and systems in support of program requirements. This includes writing, reviewing, and debugging code across relevant languages and platforms, and participating in software architecture and design decisions.
  • Support requirements analysis, software design reviews, and documentation, including design documents, test plans, and test reports.
  • Troubleshoot software issues on developmental and fielded systems, supporting root-cause analysis and corrective action development, and integrating software with hardware or other subsystems as needed.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers, hardware engineers, and government program personnel to ensure integrated system performance, and support technical reviews such as PDR, CDR, and TRR by representing software engineering considerations at program milestones.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable coding standards, cybersecurity requirements, and Risk Management Framework (RMF) processes, along with occasional travel to support testing, integration events, or coordination at other government or contractor facilities as required.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with one or more relevant programming languages such as C, C++, Python, Java, or similar.
  • Working knowledge of software development methodologies (Agile, DevSecOps, or similar) is required, along with experience supporting software testing, debugging, and verification activities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary, including the ability to prepare technical documentation and brief technical content to government and program stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience supporting DoD or U.S. Navy software development programs is preferred.
  • Experience working directly with a government engineering activity or program office is a plus, as is familiarity with embedded systems, real-time software, or systems integration.
  • Experience with configuration management tools, version control systems, and CI/CD pipelines is beneficial, along with familiarity with applicable security standards (e.g., NIST 800-53, RMF) and DoD acquisition processes.
Required Education and Length of Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering (or closely related engineering/technical discipline) from an ABET-accredited program; Master’s degree in related field highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant software engineering experience.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • The primary work environment will be an office, lab, or secure facility setting. The role may occasionally require presence in test or integration environments, shipboard environments, as well as extended periods of sitting or standing during collaborative development and testing activities.
Travel Requirements
  • Travel up to 20% is required.
  • Due to our contracts with the U.S. federal government and the requirement for a security clearance for this role, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.
Clearance Type Required
  • Candidates must be able to maintain during the duration of their employment an active Secret security clearance; active Top Secret highly preferred.
