Job OverviewNova Space Solutions (NSS) is seeking a Director of Safety, Health, Environmental & Mission Assurance (SHEMA) to support the Consolidated Operations, Services, and Maintenance Infrastructure Contract (COSMIC) at NASA Stennis Space Center (SSC) and Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF). This executive leadership role provides strategic direction for Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, Environmental, Quality, Training, and Medical Clinic operations. The SHEMA Director is responsible for fostering a culture of safety, compliance, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement while partnering with NASA customers to ensure mission success.
ResponsibilitiesEssential Job Duties:
- Serve as the principal advisor to the General Manager and Deputy General Manager on all Safety, Health, Environmental, and Mission Assurance (SHEMA) matters.
- Provide leadership and oversight for Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, Environmental, Quality, Training, and Medical Clinic operations.
- Develop and implement strategic plans, policies, and programs that support safety, regulatory compliance, mission assurance, and organizational objectives.
- Serve as the primary interface with NASA customers, tenants, and regulatory agencies on SHEMA-related matters.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, local, NASA, and contractual requirements through inspections, audits, evaluations, and training.
- Develop, manage, and administer departmental budgets while ensuring responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
- Identify, assess, communicate, and mitigate risks affecting personnel safety, environmental compliance, quality, mission execution, and organizational performance.
- Support and lead NASA, regulatory agency, and internal audits and inspections.
- Evaluate business processes and implement improvements that enhance safety, compliance, operational efficiency, and customer service.
- Promote employee engagement through coaching, mentoring, performance management, leadership development, and succession planning.
- Prepare and deliver executive-level briefings, reports, and presentations to senior leadership, customers, and regulatory agencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership for all SHEMA functions supporting NASA operations at SSC and MAF.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with NASA customers, tenants, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Drive a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
- Develop, monitor, and communicate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that measure safety performance, compliance, customer satisfaction, organizational effectiveness, and program health.
- Utilize performance data and trend analysis to identify risks, improve operational performance, and support data-driven decision-making.
- Promote proactive hazard identification, risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance across all SHEMA disciplines.
- Develop high-performing leaders through coaching, mentoring, succession planning, and professional development.
- Foster cross-functional collaboration that supports mission success and organizational excellence.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, strengthen customer relationships, and enhance overall organizational performance.
Mandatory:
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering, Occupational Health, Quality Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in Safety, Health,
- Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, Quality, Mission Assurance, or related disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary technical organizations.
- Experience developing and implementing safety, environmental, quality, compliance, and mission assurance programs.
- Experience managing regulatory compliance and supporting audits and inspections.
- Strong financial management experience, including budget development, resource planning, and cost management.
- Demonstrated ability to lead organizational change, develop high-performing teams, and build collaborative relationships.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills with experience briefing executive leadership, customers, and regulatory agencies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required NASA site access and credentials.
- Ability to successfully complete required background screening and drug testing.
Preferred:
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), or other relevant professional certification.
- Experience supporting NASA, Department of Defense (DoD), or other highly regulated government environments.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary organizations within a unionized workforce.
- Demonstrated success leading organizational change and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Experience managing complex budgets across multiple geographically separated locations.
- Experience developing and presenting executive briefings to senior leadership, customers, and regulatory agencies.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in office, laboratory, industrial, maintenance, and operational environments.
- Frequent interaction with executive leadership, NASA customers, regulatory agencies, employees, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
- Occasional travel between Stennis Space Center and Michoud Assembly Facility may be required.
- Periodic field visits to maintenance, construction, and operational work sites.
