What is contract merchandising?

Contract merchandising involves working as an independent contractor or through a staffing agency to set up, organize, and maintain product displays in retail stores. Merchandisers ensure that products are presented attractively, shelves are stocked, and promotional materials are in place according to brand or retailer guidelines. This role often requires travel between multiple store locations, adherence to specific schedules, and the ability to work independently. Contract merchandisers may work with various brands or retailers and typically do not receive benefits from the stores where they work, as they are not direct employees.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract merchandiser, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Merchandiser, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with planogram software, inventory management systems, and handheld scanners is often required. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities help you successfully coordinate with store staff and adapt to changing retail environments. These skills ensure that merchandising projects are executed efficiently, accurately, and in alignment with client expectations.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals in contract merchandising roles, and how can they be addressed?

Contract merchandising professionals often face challenges such as managing multiple retail accounts, adapting quickly to different store layouts and brand guidelines, and maintaining effective communication with both clients and store personnel. Balancing a flexible schedule while ensuring all merchandising tasks are completed on time can also be demanding. To address these challenges, strong organizational skills, proactive communication, and staying adaptable to varying work environments are essential. Building positive relationships with store staff and leveraging digital tools for scheduling and reporting can further enhance efficiency and success in this role.

About the Role
Our client, a large national retail organization known for its extensive general merchandise and omni-channel operations, is seeking a Merchandising Specialist to support their Item Data Compliance program. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented professional to gain exposure to enterprise-level data compliance operations within a fast-paced retail environment. This role is onsite 3 days per week.
Job Description
The Merchandising Specialist will provide operational and administrative support for the Item Data Compliance program, helping maintain accurate, complete, and compliant item data across the enterprise. This position supports daily audit operations, documentation, reporting, tracking, and coordination activities, working within established processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to identify missing or inconsistent information and escalate exceptions to the appropriate Compliance team members.
This is a program support role within a compliance function; the individual in this role will not be responsible for performing compliance analysis, determining audit outcomes, establishing policy, or independently making compliance decisions.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support daily compliance audit activities by creating audit lists, reviewing required documentation for completeness, and completing recurring operational and administrative tasks.
  • Maintain accurate and organized audit records, documentation, trackers, and reporting files.
  • Review documentation and data against established requirements to identify missing, incomplete, or inconsistent information and escalate exceptions appropriately.
  • Provide first-level intake for audit-related questions and disputes, documenting requests and routing issues to the appropriate team members for resolution.
  • Update and maintain audit performance dashboards, trackers, and recurring reports with accurate and timely information.
  • Coordinate with internal business partners and contractors to gather required information, documentation, and status updates.
  • Schedule meetings, track action items, and follow up on outstanding requests to support timely completion of compliance activities.
  • Support onboarding activities by preparing training materials, maintaining documentation, and coordinating administrative activities for new team members.
  • Follow established SOPs and documented processes, escalating process, documentation, or data concerns to Compliance Analysts or leadership.
  • Perform additional administrative and operational support activities as needed.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Strong attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records, documentation, trackers, and data.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including maintaining spreadsheets, sorting and filtering data, using basic formulas, and updating recurring reports or trackers.
  • Experience working within established procedures, SOPs, or other process-driven environments.
  • Ability to review documentation or data for completeness and accuracy against established requirements and appropriately escalate exceptions.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage multiple requests, track action items, and meet recurring deadlines.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively across multiple business partners and team members.
  • Experience supporting administrative or operational workflows involving areas such as data quality, audits, compliance, reporting, documentation, or program operations.
  • Ability to identify discrepancies, missing information, or process exceptions without independently making compliance determinations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting audit, compliance, data governance, item/master data, quality assurance, document control, or another process-controlled business function.
  • Experience maintaining operational dashboards, recurring reports, performance metrics, or tracking tools.
  • Experience working within a large, matrixed enterprise environment and coordinating across multiple teams or stakeholders.
  • Direct Item Data Compliance experience is not required; candidates with transferable experience in program support, data operations, audit administration, or a similar process-driven environment are encouraged to apply.
