Job description

Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI) is seeking a Software to support the 53d Test and Evaluation Group (TEG) Experimental Operations Unit (EOU) at Nellis AFB, NV.
Candidate will be responsible for work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment supporting the initial standup and follow-on experimental operations of the Air Force's first Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) unit.
This position has the primary responsibility of assisting in the experimentation and sustainment of software for CCA flight simulation including air vehicle and mission autonomy systems as well as additional CCA related software projects. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineers, operators, maintainers, and analysts, and will have strong problem-solving, adaptability, communication, leadership, and attention to detail skills.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Candidate will work in a collaborative environment focused on experimentation, iteration, and sustainment of CCA flight simulation and autonomy software.
Essential job functions will include but may not be limited to:
  • Provide overall software engineering support to the 53d Test and Evaluation Group (53d TEG) Experimental Operations Unit (EOU)
  • Assist in the development, experimentation, operation, iteration, and maintenance of flight simulator vehicle system software and Mission Autonomy (MA) software
  • Develop and maintain applications using modern web frameworks
  • Work with containerized applications and orchestration platforms
  • Contribute to data pipeline development and management
  • Collaborate on API development and system integration projects
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle from design to deployment
  • Work with various databases and data storage solutions
  • Support monitoring, logging, and observability initiatives
  • Stay up to date with relevant technologies and standards- continuously learn and apply new software development techniques and industry best practices
  • Implement cybersecurity measures- ensure software is protected from unauthorized access and cyber threats
  • Prepare correspondence per standard Government formats
  • Maintain organized and accessible electronic and physical file information according to established protocols
  • Assist with project tracking, reporting, and coordination; prepare presentations and reports related to ongoing projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Coordinate and collaborate with multiple outside agencies including US Government (USG) as well as air vehicle and mission autonomy contract vendors
  • Ensure flight simulation software meets requirements and performs as expected through unit, integration, and system test and experimentation
  • Use software tools to process and analyze collected data to assess simulated aircraft performance and identify areas for improvement
  • Troubleshoot and debug software issues- identify and resolve software problems during development, integration, and simulated flight experimentation
  • Maintain comprehensive records of software development activities to meet program requirements and facilitate future maintenance
  • Enter data into spreadsheets and databases, generating reports, and performing basic data analysis
  • Manage software configuration and version control- ensure proper tracking and control of software changes to maintain stability and traceability
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines- work closely with aeronautical, electrical, and systems engineers to integrate software with overall simulated flight experimentation systems
  • Gather feedback from pilots and other subject matter experts to identify areas for improvement in realism, usability, and training/combat effectiveness
  • Assess the usability and effectiveness of the simulator's user interface, ensuring it is intuitive and provides clear access to necessary information
  • Develop comprehensive experimentation plans that outline the testing scope, objectives, methodology, and acceptance criteria
  • Generate clear and concise experimentation reports that summarize the test results and provide recommendations

Educational Requirements:
  • Master's degree and 4+ years' engineering experience, or Bachelor's degree and 6+ years' engineering experience, or Associate's degree and 8+ years' engineering experience.

Required Skills:
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working as a Software Engineer
  • Strong scripting skills (Bash, Python preferred)
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • This position will require a strong ability and willingness to work in a team environment, with demonstrated leadership, customer interface, and organizational skills

Desired Skills/Experience:
  • 10+ years of recent experience with Software Engineering duties
  • 3+ years working in Software Engineering/Development roles in a military environment
  • 3+ years working in Software Engineering/Development roles in Developmental/Experimental or Operational Flight Test
  • 5+ years working in a classified environment (Secret level or higher)
  • Experience in any of the following technologies is desirable but not required:
  • Experience with Special Access Programs (SAP) within the last 3 years
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, KVM, Docker, Podman)
  • Experience with configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef)

Travel Requirements:
  • Occasional travel is expected based on mission requirements.
  • Expectation is that work will be performed onsite.
  • Occasional telework options may be available with approval from mission partner.
