What is a contract Java developer?

Contract Java Developers are software professionals who specialize in the Java programming language and are hired on a contract basis, rather than as permanent employees. They typically work for a set period of time or on a specific project, developing, testing, and maintaining Java-based applications according to the client’s requirements. These developers are often brought in to provide specialized expertise, handle workload spikes, or complete short-term projects. Their roles may include writing code, fixing bugs, integrating systems, and ensuring applications meet performance and security standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract Java developer?

To thrive as a Contract Java Developer, you need strong Java programming skills, experience with object-oriented design, and a solid understanding of software development lifecycles, typically supported by a relevant degree or certifications. Familiarity with frameworks like Spring, build tools such as Maven or Gradle, and version control systems like Git is commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and clear communication skills help you efficiently integrate with new teams and projects. These abilities ensure you can quickly deliver high-quality, maintainable code that meets client requirements in a dynamic contract environment.

What are some common challenges faced by contract Java developers when integrating with existing teams and projects?

Contract Java Developers often need to quickly adapt to unfamiliar codebases and team workflows, which can be challenging given tight project timelines. Effective communication is essential, as they must coordinate with permanent staff, understand project requirements, and align with established coding standards and deployment processes. Many contractors also need to manage multiple projects or clients simultaneously, requiring strong time management skills. Proactively seeking clarity on expectations and leveraging onboarding resources can help ease the integration process.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the migration of Java/J2EE applications to AWS by designing and executing cloud migration plans.

  • Architect, design, and develop solutions to modernize applications, including breaking down monolithic applications into microservices and integrating with AWS services.

  • Package applications into containers and automate infrastructure provisioning using tools like CloudFormation, SAM, or Terraform.

Job description

Developer specialized in migrating Java/J2EE applications to the cloud. You will take ownership for modernizing Java/J2EE applications and migrating them to AWS by re-architecting them to leverage cloud-native features and improve scalability, performance, and agility, while minimizing disruption to existing functionality.

Responsibilities
  • Lead Cloud Architecture & Migration: Take ownership of architecture refinement and improvement of an enterprise cloud migration project. Design a migration plan, considering options like “replatforming” (adjusting to cloud services with minimal code changes) or “refactoring” (major code restructuring to fully leverage cloud-native features).
  • Architectural Design & Development: Lead a team of developers to Architect and Design and as required Develop pieces of Architectural Runway & Reference Architecture that Legacy JAVA / J2EE teams could use to migrate their applications to cloud.
  • Application Modernization: Modify existing Java code to integrate with AWS services, potentially breaking down monolithic applications into microservices for better scalability.
  • Service Selection & Integration: Choose appropriate AWS services based on application requirements, including EC2 / ECS / EKS for compute, S3 for storage, RDS for databases, API Gateway for API management, and Lambda for serverless functions. Define a disaster recovery mechanism for the same.
  • Containerization & Automation: Package applications into Docker containers for efficient deployment and scaling on AWS services like ECS or EKS. Utilize tools like AWS CloudFormation, SAM, or Terraform to define and automate infrastructure provisioning for consistent deployment across environments.
  • Governance & Cost Management: Work closely with project leadership and the Architectural Review Board on proposed architecture designs, ensuring cost efficiency, scalability, and effectiveness when proposing solutions.
  • Communication & Cadence: Define the cadence at which the team will meet its defined objectives and communicate regularly with project leadership about achievements and milestones.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • At least 5+ years of hands-on experience migrating applications onto the AWS platform.
  • Solid migration experience from on-premises servers to AWS using appropriate tools and frameworks.
  • Strong Java programming skills and experience with J2EE frameworks like Spring, Hibernate, and JSF.
  • Strong understanding of AWS architecture and cloud computing concepts.
  • Expertise in containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like CloudFormation or Terraform.
  • Knowledge of database migration strategies and experience with different database systems.
  • Understanding of DevOps practices for continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex issues in distributed, cloud-based environments.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
