Job description

OVERVIEW:
The Assistant Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations associated with CLUB4 Fitness (both existing entities as well as new CLUB development) and The Club at Township, and also for both cash and risk management.
The scope of the Assistant Controller's responsibilities include producing periodic financial reports, building and maintaining an adequate system of accounting records, and a developing (as well as maintaining) a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk. Additionally, the Assistant Controller is also responsible for enhancing the accuracy of the company's reported financial results and ensuring that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and or ability required.
Management
  • Maintains and enforces a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Manage outsourced functions
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
  • Oversee the accounting operations of subsidiary corporations, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures

Transactions
  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
  • Process payroll in a timely manner
  • Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed
  • Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions

Reporting
  • Issue timely and complete financial statements
  • Coordinate the preparation of the corporate annual report
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
  • Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Provide for a system of management cost reports
  • Provide financial analyses as needed, for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations

Compliance
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings

Special Projects and Other Duties as assigned
  • May require some travel to satellite facilities and/or weekend work in order to prepare for special filings, audits, or to meet deadlines for financial reporting, tax filings, and loan applications

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
The Assistant Controller will report directly to the Managing Partner and via a dotted-line supervisory relationship to an assigned 3rd party Controller at Kerioth, but will act as a resource, liaison, and facilitator between executives, Operations and fitness senior leadership, executives, as well as corporate.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1) Knowledge, skills & abilities:
  • Proven track record as a financial/accounting leader
  • Experience with start-up organizations, preferred, but multi-facility organization familiarity is a must
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and negotiation skills are required.
  • Must be a strong communicator across all mediums
  • Ability to be a self-starter and demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Ability to work in both a team environment and independently.
  • Detail orientation and focus with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time management skills, ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Incredibly responsive and adaptable with strong intuitive abilities.
  • Strong project management skills with analytical capabilities.
  • Strong computer skills (Google docs, Microsoft Office Suite) required.
  • Willingness to travel up to 15% to domestic/local clubs as needed to conduct due diligence, compliance reviews, inventory audits, etc., and to address all other onsite financial concerns

2) Minimum certifications/educational level:
  • Four-year degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience
  • 6+ years of progressively responsible experience for a major company or division of a large corporation
  • Preference may be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations Experience within corporate or personal wellness or gym/fitness industry, a plus
  • Previous experience supporting a organization in 'growth mode', preferred

  • Noise level is generally low but may be louder and more intense in gym facilities
  • Travel may be required in relationship to new facility openings as well as to potential acquirees to conduct due diligence
  • Hours are generally traditional business hours but may, at times, extend to long or late hours to accommodate the different time zones of club facilities as well as to address projects and other matters involving social media. Periodic weekend or evening work is expected.
