What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Illustrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Illustrator, you need strong drawing abilities, a solid understanding of visual storytelling, and a portfolio demonstrating your artistic style and versatility. Proficiency in industry-standard design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and sometimes digital drawing tablets is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and adaptability help build client relationships and manage multiple projects effectively. These skills ensure that illustrations meet client specifications, deadlines, and quality standards in a competitive freelance market.

How does a contract illustrator typically collaborate with clients and creative teams throughout a project?

As a contract illustrator, you will often begin projects by discussing the client's vision, objectives, and brand guidelines, either directly with clients or through an art director. Regular communication is essential, often involving feedback loops at various stages—sketches, drafts, and final revisions—to ensure the artwork meets expectations. Collaboration may also include working with writers, graphic designers, and marketing teams to align the illustrations with overall project goals. Being open to feedback, managing deadlines, and maintaining clear documentation of changes are key to successful partnerships in this role.

What are contract illustrators?

Contract illustrators are professional artists hired on a freelance or temporary basis to create visual artwork, such as drawings, digital illustrations, or graphics, for clients. They typically work on specific projects, such as book covers, advertisements, product packaging, or editorial content, rather than being permanent staff members of a company. Their work is guided by the client's requirements, and they may collaborate with art directors, writers, or marketing teams. Contract illustrators often manage multiple projects for different clients at once, and they are responsible for meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality artwork. This role offers creative flexibility and the opportunity to work across diverse industries.

Job description

About Messagepoint

Messagepoint is a privately-owned software company providing an AI-powered SaaS solution that enables enterprises to manage and personalize customer communications with greater speed, accuracy, and control. Our award-winning platform empowers business users to create and optimize compliant, personalized communications across digital and print channels using advanced content intelligence and large language models.

Messagepoint is headquartered in Toronto with employees located throughout Canada, the United States, France and the UK.

About the Role

We're looking for a detail-oriented Graphic Designer to support the creation of high-quality, brand-compliant marketing assets for a growing SaaS company. This is a 2-month contract role with potential for extension. Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, you will directly influence how our brand and product are perceived in the market, helping to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively to prospects and clients. You will also work closely on a daily basis with our Creative Director, collaborating to ensure a high standard of visual execution and consistency across all assets.

You'll work across a variety of digital and client-facing materials, bringing a strong visual eye and a high level of precision to everything you produce. This role requires someone who is comfortable working within established design systems and templates, and taking direction that is often communicated verbally, while making thoughtful, independent design decisions that elevate overall quality and consistency.

Success in this role comes from a collaborative and proactive mindset, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and a sharp attention to detail, from composition and hierarchy to typography and spacing. Your work will play an important role in supporting growth, engagement, and customer understanding during a key stage of the company's evolution.

What You'll Do

  • Create and refine marketing assets including website graphics, sales collateral, presentations, and product visuals
  • Use Adobe Photoshop for advanced compositing, masking, retouching, and UI cleanup
  • Design vector-based illustrations and icons in Adobe Illustrator aligned with brand guidelines
  • Update and adapt multi-page layouts in Adobe InDesign, including translated or localized content
  • Prepare and export web-ready assets with proper sizing, naming conventions, and optimization
  • Collaborate with marketing, product, and content teams to bring campaigns and product stories to life
  • Maintain consistency across all assets while contributing to the evolution of the brand system
  • Support video production and post-production, including editing webinars, screen recordings, and marketing videos
  • Enhance video content with graphics, captions, and light motion elements using tools such as After Effects

What You Bring (Skills & Experience)

  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Strong experience with Photoshop compositing, including masking, retouching, and combining UI elements into polished visuals
  • Ability to design clean, scalable vector graphics and conceptual illustrations
  • Experience producing client-facing and marketing materials, preferably in a SaaS or B2B environment
  • Experience with video editing and post-production, particularly webinar and screen recording content
  • Strong understanding of web vs. print asset requirements (formats, resolution, responsiveness)
  • Experience working within brand guidelines and structured design systems
  • High attention to detail, including typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with Webflow or similar CMS platforms
  • Experience with motion design (After Effects, Lottie, or similar)
  • Experience working with bilingual or French-language content
  • Understanding of how to stage and simplify SaaS UI for marketing purposes

Portfolio Requirement

Candidates should be prepared to share work samples that demonstrate, at minimum: UI or product screenshot retouching and compositing, vector illustration or icon-based conceptual imagery, and multi-page document layout. Experience with SaaS or technology marketing materials is strongly preferred.
