What is a contract hot shot?

A Contract Hot Shot job involves using a personal truck or small freight vehicle to quickly transport urgent loads for clients, often on short notice. Hot shot drivers typically handle time-sensitive deliveries that don't require a full-sized semi-truck, such as construction materials, equipment, or urgent freight. Since it's a contract position, drivers operate as independent owner-operators, managing their own schedules, expenses, and clients. Success in this role depends on reliability, efficiency, and having the necessary licenses, insurance, and equipment.

What are the typical work conditions and expectations for a contract hot shot driver?

Contract Hot Shot drivers often operate on-call, transporting time-sensitive loads with short notice, which requires flexibility in scheduling and adaptability to changing routes. Work may involve long hours, extended travel, and navigating rural or remote areas, especially in industries like oilfield services. Drivers are typically responsible for loading and securing cargo, maintaining their vehicle, and ensuring all paperwork and regulatory requirements are met. While most hot shot drivers work independently, clear communication with dispatchers and clients is crucial for successful deliveries. This role is ideal for those who thrive in dynamic environments and enjoy the freedom and responsibility of working autonomously.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the contract hot shot position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract Hot Shot driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of DOT regulations for transporting urgent freight, often for the oil and gas industry. Familiarity with dispatch management systems and GPS navigation tools is critical to ensure timely and efficient delivery. Strong communication, reliability, and the ability to work independently under pressure are valuable soft skills. These competencies are essential to meet tight deadlines, maintain safety, and ensure customer satisfaction in this high-demand, time-sensitive hauling role.

Job description

We're hiring: Independent Freight Agent (1099 · Fully Remote · Commission)

Perpetual Enterprise, LLC · Remote (U.S., all 48 states) · Contract

Most freight brokerages hand you a phone and a quota. We hand you our authority, our carrier network, and a back office — then let you build a book that's yours to keep.

Perpetual Enterprise is a licensed, bonded nationwide brokerage (MC# 1027408) built around heavy haul, oversize, flatbed, hot shot, and expedited freight — the high-margin lanes most generalist brokers won't touch. We're looking for independent agents who know how equipment dealers, rental houses, and contractors actually move freight.

The role

You build and own your own book — prospecting shippers, quoting, booking, and keeping accounts loyal. Cover your own freight when you want to. When you don't, our 24/7 operations desk covers it for you at no cost to your commission.

What you'd do

→ Prospect and develop your own book in the markets you know

→ Manage accounts end to end: quoting, booking, and relationships

→ Cover your own loads from our vetted carrier network, or get support from the desk — same commission either way

→ Optionally cover freight for the company or other agents for extra commission

The comp — two ways to earn, and they stack

→ 15% of Net Margin on every load you originate

→ Plus 10% of Net Margin on any load you cover that you didn't originate

→ No draws, no caps, no tiers to climb. Paid on collected loads.

→ The book you build is yours — we don't claw back accounts you develop

What we provide

→ Active FMCSA broker authority (MC# 1027408) — you operate under our license

→ Surety bond and broker liability coverage

→ A vetted, insured carrier network across all 48 states

→ A 24/7 ops desk that will help you cover loads

→ Back office for invoicing, collections, and carrier payments

→ Quoting tools, including heavy-haul and permit pricing

→ Direct onboarding and training until you're running clean

Who I'm looking for

Someone with a background in heavy equipment rental, contractor logistics, freight brokerage, or transportation sales. An existing book is a huge plus.

A few things to know

This is a 1099 independent contractor role, not a W-2 position. The agreement runs business-to-business, so you'll need an LLC or corporation (we'll walk you through setting one up if you don't have one yet). You set your own schedule and methods, handle your own taxes, and are free to run other non-conflicting business.
