Contract Hl7 Interface Engineer information

What is a contract HL7 interface engineer?

A Contract HL7 Interface Engineer is a technical professional hired on a contract basis to design, develop, implement, and maintain HL7 interfaces that allow different healthcare systems to exchange information. HL7 (Health Level Seven) is a set of international standards for the exchange of electronic health information. These engineers ensure that data is transmitted accurately and securely between various healthcare applications, such as electronic health records (EHRs), laboratory systems, and radiology systems. They typically work with healthcare providers, software vendors, and IT teams to troubleshoot issues, manage interface projects, and ensure regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by contract HL7 interface engineers when integrating with multiple healthcare systems?

Contract HL7 Interface Engineers often encounter challenges such as varying HL7 standards across different healthcare organizations, legacy system compatibility, and inconsistent data formats. Adapting interfaces to unique workflows and ensuring secure, real-time data exchange can also require troubleshooting and close collaboration with IT and clinical staff. Frequent communication with client teams and thorough documentation are key to efficiently resolving integration issues and maintaining project timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract HL7 interface engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract HL7 Interface Engineer, you need a deep understanding of HL7 standards, interface development, and healthcare data integration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with interface engines (like Mirth Connect, Rhapsody, or Cloverleaf), proficiency in scripting languages, and relevant certifications such as HL7 certification are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with clinical and IT teams. Mastery of these skills ensures reliable, secure, and efficient data exchange across healthcare systems, which is vital for patient care and regulatory compliance.

What is the difference between Contract Hl7 Interface Engineer vs Contract EHR Integration Specialist?

The ideal candidate can translate clinical/business requirements into HL7 mappings and partner with technical and non-technical stakeholders to deliver stable, compliant (HIPAA) integrations with minimal ramp-up time.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop, enhance, and support HL7 v2.x interfaces in Epic Bridges with Cloverleaf as the primary integration engine.• Design, build, and support Epic Bridges interfaces and related interoperability workflows, including vendor interfaces connected to Epic.
• Perform message analysis, mapping, and troubleshooting for common HL7 message types (ADT, MDM, ORM, ORU, SIU, DFT, X12 etc.) and resolve interface failures independently.
• Translate clinical/business requirements into HL7 mappings and integration specifications; create and maintain interface specs, mapping documents, diagrams and support guides.
• Perform Epic-side build/configuration changes in Bridges required to enable or modify interfaces.
• Support Epic upgrade cycles, including Nova Notes review, regression testing, and end-to-end validation.
• Monitor interface queues and transaction logs for errors/latency; coordinate remediation and communicate status and impact to non-technical stakeholders.
• Ensure data exchange complies with HIPAA and organizational security standards; support secure connectivity patterns as required.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Required: 5+ years hands-on Epic Bridges interface development and production support in a healthcare environment (Bridges certification required; hands-on build/support).
• Required: 5+ years hands-on HL7 v2.x development and production support using Cloverleaf in a healthcare environment.
• Required: Expert-level Bridges and Cloverleaf experience with ability to independently deliver new interfaces from initial requirements gathering, building, testing, and production deployment.
• Expert-level knowledge and proven experience in building ADT, SIU, ORM, ORU, MDM, DFT, 837/835, 270/271, 276/277, and 278 interfaces.
• Ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve Cloverleaf interface failures without direct supervision.
• Experience performing Epic-side build changes to enable or modify interfaces.
• Experience supporting vendor interfaces connected to Epic and supporting Epic upgrade cycles (Nova Notes review and regression testing).
• Prior work supporting live hospital or large multi-facility health system integrations in a live Epic environment.
• Extensive knowledge of how Epic Bridges and Cloverleaf interact during message flow and error scenarios.
• Epic Bridges certification (required); Epic Data Courier certification (preferred/strong plus).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain issues clearly to non-technical stakeholders. • Experience working in HIPAA-regulated healthcare IT environments.
• Experience supporting 24x7 production and on-call environments.
• Available to start immediately (minimal or no ramp-up time).
Preferred Qualifications
• Epic Data Courier certification.
• FHIR and/or API-based integration experience.
• Secure transport and file transfer (VPN/TLS, SFTP) configuration and support.
• Experience with HIEs, external registries, and cloud integration patterns.
• Additional scripting/programming experience (e.g., Python, Java, .NET, JavaScript).
Must Have (Non-Negotiable) Skills
• Epic Bridges interface development and production support (5+ years) in a live Epic healthcare environment (certification required).
• Expert-level Cloverleaf knowledge (5+ years) for HL7 v2.x development and production support.
• HL7 v2.x message analysis/troubleshooting for ADT, SIU, ORM, ORU, MDM DFT, 837/835, 270/271, 276/277, and 278 interfaces (and related workflows) including independent resolution of interface failures.
• Hands-on understanding of Epic Bridges ? Cloverleaf message flow and error scenarios in a 24x7 production/on-call environment.
Important (Strongly Preferred) Skills
• Translate clinical/business requirements into HL7 mappings; produce clear interface specifications and mapping documentation.
• Perform Epic-side build/configuration changes to enable or modify interfaces; support vendor interfaces connected to Epic.
• Support Epic upgrade cycles (Nova Notes review, regression testing) and end-to-end validation.
• Strong communication skills and experience operating in HIPAA-regulated environments with non-technical stakeholders.
