Position Summary
The University of NewMexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and the Department of InternalMedicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at the UNM School of Medicine inviteapplications from physicians with trainingand expertise in hematology or medical oncology and a focused interest inclinical care and clinical or translational research, with experience and expertise in thetreatment and management of hematologic malignancies, in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, or innovative cell-based or targeted immunotherapies. The successfulapplicant will participate in the multidisciplinary clinical care of patientsand in the design and conduct of cancer clinical trials as a member of the UNMCCCMultidisciplinary Working Groups. This is an Open Rank, Open Track position.Faculty rank and appointment will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments.The successful applicant will have fellowship training and strong interest inthe development of clinical trials in Hematologic Malignancies and CellularTherapy. Emphasis is placed on the ability to foster interactions betweenlaboratory and clinical investigators, participate in multidisciplinary researchteams, and participate in the teaching mission of the Division and the CancerCenter. The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) The University of NewMexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexicoand the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mileradius. Its more than 120 board-certified oncology specialty physicians includecancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue,neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult andpediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, andradiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcareprofessionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologistsand social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico's cancer patientsfrom all across the state and partner with community health systems statewideto provide cancer care closer to home. They treated approximately 14,000patients in about 100,000 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patienthospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of nearly 400 patients participatedin cancer clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests ofnovel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than100 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $35.7million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer researchprojects. Since 2015, they have published nearly 1000 manuscripts, andpromoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 newbiotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staffhave provided education and training experiences to more than 500 high school,undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancerresearch and cancer health care delivery. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • MD or MD/PhD degree or equivalent with board certification in Internal Medicine
  • Board certification/eligibility in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology
  • Experience in cancer clinical trials and/or translational laboratory research with a focused interest in hematologic malignancies, and
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in cancer clinical trial design and conduct
  • Expertise in Hematopoietic Stem Cell transplantation and CAR T cell therapy
  • Experience in the development of novel therapeutic pathways, compounds or treatment modalities
  • Experience in resident/fellow education.
  • Experience in clinical and translational research.
  • A demonstrated commitmentto diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working withbroadly diverse communities.
