As a contract fintech software engineer, one of the primary challenges is quickly adapting to unfamiliar codebases and domain-specific regulations, such as PCI DSS or AML requirements. You’ll often need to ramp up rapidly on proprietary systems and integrate with existing teams, all while meeting tight deadlines. Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll frequently collaborate with both in-house developers and non-technical stakeholders to ensure compliance and deliver robust solutions. Staying updated on evolving financial regulations and fintech technologies is also crucial for success in these dynamic environments.

What is a contract fintech software engineer?

A Contract Fintech Software Engineer is a technology professional who is hired on a temporary or project basis to develop, maintain, or enhance software solutions in the financial technology (fintech) sector. These engineers work with banks, startups, or financial institutions to build secure, scalable, and compliant applications such as payment systems, trading platforms, or digital wallets. They often possess strong skills in programming languages relevant to fintech, as well as knowledge of financial regulations and security best practices. Contract roles offer flexibility for both the engineer and the hiring company, typically focusing on short-term or specialized projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract fintech software engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Fintech Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in Python, Java, or C#), a solid understanding of financial systems, and relevant software engineering experience. Familiarity with fintech platforms, cloud services (like AWS or Azure), APIs, and knowledge of security standards or certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) are often required. Outstanding problem-solving, adaptability, and clear communication skills help you excel in dynamic, fast-paced contract environments. These competencies ensure you can quickly deliver secure, scalable solutions that meet the unique regulatory and technical demands of the fintech industry.

Job description

As a Software Development Engineer on the WW Stores FinTech team, you will design and build core components of our next-generation data infrastructure systems. A centerpiece of this work is MetricsEngine, a greenfield platform we are building from the ground up to become the single source of truth for financial metric computation across WWASFT.
MetricsEngine introduces a governed registry of metric definitions with versioning and ownership, a unified query layer that federates computation across multiple analytical backends, a single API surface for consistent consumption, and opt-in materialization for sub-second dashboard latency. Critically, MetricsEngine publishes its metric catalog to AI discovery and agent frameworks, enabling intelligent systems to reason over, compute, and surface financial insights using standardized definitions without human intervention.
You will own the design and delivery of key platform components end-to-end, contribute to architectural decisions that shape how the system scales, and write high-quality code that sets the standard for the team. You will collaborate closely with senior engineers and partner teams to solve ambiguous problems, influence technical direction through your implementations, and help establish patterns that the broader organization adopts.
If you enjoy solving complex technical challenges in high-data-volume environments, building foundational platforms from scratch, and making a tangible impact on Amazon's financial ecosystem worldwide, this role is your opportunity. Come join us on this exciting journey!
Key job responsibilities
- Design and build core components of MetricsEngine end-to-end: contribute to the governed metric registry, federated query layer, unified API, materialization framework, and AI-facing catalog that serves as the single source of financial truth across WWASFT products.
- Build the integration layer between MetricsEngine and AI agent frameworks, enabling intelligent systems to discover, interpret, and compute financial metrics programmatically using governed definitions.
- Design and implement scalable data infrastructure components, applying architectural patterns that optimize performance, security, and reliability across the data lifecycle from ingestion to reporting.
- Contribute to technical direction and team standards. Implement data access frameworks and storage patterns. Participate in design reviews and champion engineering best practices that elevate code quality and data integrity.
- Raise the bar for the team through code reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing. Grow your expertise in distributed systems, cloud architecture, and system design while helping onboard and support fellow engineers.
- Partner with Software Engineers, Software Managers, Product Managers, Data Engineers, and cross-functional teams to deliver solutions that meet business objectives and technical requirements.
