The Contract Fintech Software Engineer specializes in developing financial technology solutions within finance-focused environments, requiring industry-specific knowledge. In contrast, a Contract Software Developer has a broader scope, working across various industries without necessarily focusing on finance. The key differences lie in industry expertise and project focus, making the fintech engineer role more niche-specific.

What are some common challenges faced by contract fintech software engineers when joining new projects?

As a contract fintech software engineer, one of the primary challenges is quickly adapting to unfamiliar codebases and domain-specific regulations, such as PCI DSS or AML requirements. You’ll often need to ramp up rapidly on proprietary systems and integrate with existing teams, all while meeting tight deadlines. Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll frequently collaborate with both in-house developers and non-technical stakeholders to ensure compliance and deliver robust solutions. Staying updated on evolving financial regulations and fintech technologies is also crucial for success in these dynamic environments.

What is a Contract Fintech Software Engineer?

A Contract Fintech Software Engineer is a technology professional who is hired on a temporary or project basis to develop, maintain, or enhance software solutions in the financial technology (fintech) sector. These engineers work with banks, startups, or financial institutions to build secure, scalable, and compliant applications such as payment systems, trading platforms, or digital wallets. They often possess strong skills in programming languages relevant to fintech, as well as knowledge of financial regulations and security best practices. Contract roles offer flexibility for both the engineer and the hiring company, typically focusing on short-term or specialized projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Fintech Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Fintech Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in Python, Java, or C#), a solid understanding of financial systems, and relevant software engineering experience. Familiarity with fintech platforms, cloud services (like AWS or Azure), APIs, and knowledge of security standards or certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) are often required. Outstanding problem-solving, adaptability, and clear communication skills help you excel in dynamic, fast-paced contract environments. These competencies ensure you can quickly deliver secure, scalable solutions that meet the unique regulatory and technical demands of the fintech industry.

Job description

About Zip
Zip is the AI platform for enterprise procurement - built for humans and agents working together. By orchestrating procurement across teams, tools, and suppliers with the help of AI agents, companies can secure the resources they need to innovate faster than ever before.
The world's most influential enterprises trust Zip, including T-Mobile, OpenAI, AMD, Mars, Dollar Tree, and more. Together they've saved over $8 billion and processed over $500 billion in spend. Zip's team includes product leaders from Apple, Airbnb, and Meta, as well as former procurement leaders from United Health, Sanofi, MGM Resorts, Discover, and NASA.
Backed by Adams Street, Alkeon, BOND, CRV, DST, Tiger Global, and Y Combinator, Zip has raised $371 million, most recently at a $2.2 billion valuation and has been recognized by Forbes Fintech 50, Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies, Inc. Best in Business, and LinkedIn Top Startups.
Your Role
The Identity team is responsible for the platforms that manage user access and data confidentiality for customers. As a Software Engineer on the team, you will take on a dynamic role, developing core customer-facing identity products, such as authentication/authorization, user account security, and encryption key management. We move quickly to solve a wide range of complex technical and product challenges. While we are an experienced team that can provide constant guidance and mentorship, we value engineers who can autonomously scope and solve complex technical challenges.
You will
  • Design and build product features for enterprise customers, such as AI-powered anomaly detection for payment fraud and account takeovers, granular access control and identity management, and bring-your-own-key encryption.
  • Work closely with cross-functional product and customer-facing teams to understand requirements and ship thoughtful solutions.
  • Work closely with our customers' security teams (e.g., Discover, Snowflake, and Anthropic) to understand their needs and learn how they assess risk.
  • Build guardrails, tooling, frameworks, and automation to empower software engineers to ship secure changes and prevent vulnerabilities from reaching the main branch.
  • Design and build scalable frontend applications and components.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 1+ years of experience in a software engineering role. This role requires software development experience.
  • Experience with web application and API development in production environments. At Zip, our stack includes Python, Typescript, React, and GraphQL.
  • Experience in enterprise SaaS, fintech, software security best practices, and compliance frameworks is a bonus, but not required.
The salary range for this role is $150,000 - $210,000. The salary for this position is determined based on a variety of job-related factors that may include location, relevant experience, education, or particular skills and expertise.
Perks & Benefits
At Zip, we're committed to providing our employees with everything they need to do their best work.
  • Start-up equity
  • 100% health, vision & dental coverage options
  • Catered breakfast, lunch, & dinner
  • Flexible PTO
  • ClassPass membership
  • Monthly commuter benefit
  • Team building events & happy hours
  • Home office stipend
  • Phone/internet reimbursement
  • Hybrid model + 5 flexible remote days per quarter
  • Paid parental leave
  • Fertility benefits
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Unlimited AI token usage

We're looking to hire Zipsters and that means hiring people who take ownership, communicate openly, have an underdog mindset, and are excited to increase the pace of innovation for every business in the world. We encourage all candidates to apply even if your experience doesn't exactly match up to our job description. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workspace where everyone (regardless of age, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and more) feels like they belong. We look forward to hearing from you!
